[THB PREBB Special Berviee.] Favourites fared badly at the opening of the Auckland Trotting Club I ** Unemployment Relief Meeting at Alexandra Park, when Surprise Journey was the only actual first fancy to win. On the whole the dividends were of good proportions, and those of Moko Chief and Great Delight reached double figures. The track was Boft and times were neaessarily glow. A Solid Trotter. Seasoned home in Nelson Girl and Direct Action proved too solid.for the other* In the Grey Lynn Handicap, and over the last three furlongs they had the contest to themselves, Nelson Girl always having a slight advantage over Direct Action, and winning by about a length. The favourite, CaboHero. was slow to settle down, and then after running to the lead at the end of two furlongs he broke again with a lap to go( dropping back to fourth, where he Aniseed. Two other well-backed horses in Ookley \»ood and Moko Bell failed to go solidly, and never gave any trouble, Moko Bell extinguishing his ehanoe at the start. Zansibar trotted a good race to finish fourth, and Is sure; to do better with experience. Another likely improver is Windchat, a half-sister to Betty Moko, who showed a nice turn of speed and finished fifth, Backers Astray. The' Ponsonby Handicap was a great race until the last hundred yards, when Moko Chief smothered, the others and won decisively. Nelson's Ohura, Prince Pedro, and Whakahihi wera the favourites, but Nelson b Chum made a moderate showing, whereas Prlnoe Pedro paced a fine raja to ftl»»n second. Windshield and Lucy Belle attended to the pacemaking, and they were first into i the straight with Prince Pedro, Student • Prince, and Moko Chief In close attendance Onee round the bend the Jeaders were all under pressure, and Moko Chief Bnished wellon the outside to beat Prlnoe Pedro by over a length. Lucy Bell was a close third, and i Student Prince fourth. Next came Kewple s . Guy and Windshield. The winner was at a : good price, and won well. Hitherto he has been very unreliable, but seems to have settled down. Prlnoe Pedro was a shade unlucky, while Windshield, a full-sister to Free Advice, Lucy Bell, and Kewpie's Guy ail shaped well, A Stirring Ftoieh. 1 A wonderful finish in the Auckland HandiI cap saw heads between the placed horses, the i rank outsider. Great Delight, gaining the honours from Grand Light and Stanmoor. The race attracted solid wagering, and Enawah was a pronounced favourite over Grand Light and the Warplane-Laplander bracket. » Enawah failed to go away correctly, and lost about three seconds before moving off. Onee the field had settled down Great Delight and Stanmoor woro the leaders, with the others closely bunched. With a lap to go Great Delight was still in charge, closely followed by Evelyn Locanda, Grand Light, Enawah, and Stanmoor. There was little between Gtreat Delight, Grand Light, and Stanmoor entering the straight, and they reb tained this order to the post. Laplander was . fourth and Nelson Tasker fifth. Great Delight had not won a race for well over twelve months, and his win was overdue. Grand B Light had to covor more ground than the 3 winner, and this just made the difference Stanmoor paced a sound race, and Enawah y also went well after losing her handicap I) early. If she had gone away well she would a have been in the picture. Warplane waa ;, never daneerous, and finished a long way :, back. John Mauritius trotted faultlessly, i but never looked dangerous, j Nella Billon Wins. 0 For the Mount Roskill Handicap Trustworthy was installed a good favourite over r Nella Dillon and Dealer. Trustworthy flatt tered the hopes of her supporters by runy ning up second with five furlongs to go, but e one of her kneeboots came down, and she g went to a bad break that completely settled t her chance. Kingsclere led early, and t'hre* a furlongs from home he, was still in eommand b from Dealer. Woodvale, and Nella Dillon. B Just as they entered the straight Nella I>il i lon secured an opening and dashed through s to win all out by half a 'ength from Wood 1 vale, who beat Kingsclere by a neck. Dealer f was fourth, and Direct Morning fifth. Dealer i lost about two seconds on the mark, other y wise ha would have given more trouble, e Horsemanship played a part in Nella Dili lon's suooess, as she was very cleverly it handled by A. Julian. - b An Australian Trotter. It Making his first appearance in New Zealand, the Austrauan-bfred trotter Surprise 1- Journey was sent out favourite for the Ones' hunga Handicap, and he duly scored ale, though he had to do his best at the finish to j, stall off a determined challenge from Parai; di/;m, who was a good second favourite. With the exception of Bright Light and Ex-

plosion, who broke early, and the backmarker Tiger Salve, tho field was soon in close order, with Paradigm making the pace. Surpriee Journey took, up the running when they had qovered a round, and he was still ] In charge entering the straight from Paradigm and Kolmar. A hundred yards from the post it looked as if Surprise Journey mighti be beaten, but he battled on gamely 'to win by three-part* of a length from Paradigm. Kolmar was three lengths away third, and The Tartar fourth. Next came Bebisoa and Gold Sovereign. The winner is a nice, horse, likely to improve with rac- ■ ing. Paradigm was under pressure a long t way from home, and battled on in the earnest possible manner. Sebiaoa spoilt an otherwise good showing by several breaks, while Gold Sovereign and Tho Tartar trotted solid races. _ ! Mignonne Improves. Little Guy, Trustworthy, and Mignonne were < best backed for the Ellerslle Handicap, and they were all prominent in the running, although Little Guy missed a plaoe. He was unfortunate, as his driver 'was out of , tho sulky when the field was sent away, and ho lost a good deal of ground Lady Jewel < led • for about four furlongs, when Arachno assumed command, and Mignonne also ran into a good position. Araohne, Mignonne, i Trustworthy, Little Guy, and Nelsonian were j the only ones with chances when they commenced the last lap. Arachne was still in front at the turn, but she was outstayed by Mignonne, who won by a length and a half Trustworthy was close up third, and Littie Guy fourth, with Pan Direct heading a beaten lot, Mignonne was well handled by J Bryce, and finished too strongly for Arachne, who did not improve her chance ; by pulling hard. The most likely improver in the race was Dan Direct, who was kept right out of it early, and then came with a belated run at the finish. A Close Finish. The Avondale Handteap providod a fitting conclusion to a day of spectacular finishes, the first four horses having a thrilling tussle up the straight. Country King, Belle Axworthy and Mountain Dell were best backed, and the only one of the trio who failed to make a showing was Belle Axworthy. Brutus and Goldman were quickly prominent, and Brutuß and Country King led into the straight from Goldman, Mountain Dell and Hal Chimes. Mountain Dell finished best. to win by half a length from Hal Chimes, with Country King a head away third. Brutus was fourth, followed by Goldman and The Abbcv Warplane auain cut up badly, and it iV evident that he Is not at homo tn soft going. Bello Axworfry .failed to show hor brilliancy, and is not quite right yet. TO-DAY'S PROGRAMME. The Auckland Trotting Club'a Meeting will be concluded to-day, and with good ftelda engaged in the different events interesting sport should be the result. Phalaris, Bosworth, and SnnI sovino, which won the Derby for him i several years ago. He will also not ' onri with his younger brood mares. 1 The cream of. fne stable will be kept but the rest will come under the hammer at Newmarket in October or De- ■ pember.
