ARTHUR'S PASS.

RAIN SPOILS TRIP. The weather was unfortunate for the Kailway Department's excursion tq Arthur's Pass yesterday, and although, two trains were run, one would have been sufficient. The first train took 2(51 from Christchurch, and the second 3.79. ; The adverse weather report, and in particular the reported absence of snow at v the Pass, was responsible for the diminished attendance. Bain commenced to fall at Cass, and at Arthur's Pass there was a steady downpour all day. Snow sports were out of the question. However, there was .little more than the usual amount of water in the streams and many of tlie excursionists who were suitably garbed indulged in walking trips, the glacier track and the Devil's Punch Bowl being most favoured. A number of excursionists remained in the trains most of the day, or attended impromptu entertainments iii 'the old school or the railway social hall. The practice of the Department in providing well-heated carriages for the return trip was much < appreciated, especially by those trampers, who arrived back wet from the.rain and crossing streams.
