RICCARTON BUSH.

TRUSTEES SHORT OF FUNDS. According to a letter received 1 by the Riccarton Borough Council, read tit last bight's meeting, from Mr C. IS. Foweraker, honorary secretary and treasurer of the' Board of Trustes of the Riccarton Bush, the trustees aro in need of financial support. The letter asked the Council to renew\tlie grant, made by it in 1927, Of £2O. There was a debit balance on March 31st last. The Bush, being situated in the Borough of Riccarton, was largely used by its residents, and the Board should have more financial support from the Council than at present was being given it. The Board's grants at present were: Chrlstchurch City Council £100; Canterbury College £2s; Waimairi County Council £l3; and annual contributor* (about) £ls. By the tine the ranger's salary was paid there was very little left to pay for repairs, improvements, and occasional labour. In 1029 the Board'« debit balance was £2O; this had been reduced to £8; but unless its finances improved the Board would have another large debit balance in 1931. A determined effort was being made to secure more annual contributors, but if the Council could renew its grant of £2O it would ease the Board's financial disability. Cr. C. 6. McKellar: We, also, have a big debit balance! Cr. John Woods: If there is one thing that the Council should contribute to it is the Riccarton Bush, but the Council is short of funds. He moved that the letter be referred to the Finance Committee. Or. H. W. Wise seconded. The Mayor (Mr H. S. S. Kyle, M.P.) said that evidently all the Board's funds were spent on the ranger, but what the man found to do he did not know. Cr. Wood: I think we could squeeio a little out of the estimates. Cr. McKellar: There it nothing to squeeze 1 The motion was lost, and it was de : cided to reply that the Council could not see its way to make a grant.
