CHILDREN'S PLAYGROUNDS. CITY COUNCIL'S DECISION. The committee of the Phillipstown School has written to the Abattoir, Markets, and Reserves Committee ot thti Christchnrch City Council, stating that it has received an offer of land adjncent to the school playground for the purpose of extending that area. The committee reported to the Council last night that it was of the opinion that extensions to the playground were not necessary, in consequence ot which it had thanked the owner of the land for his offer and informed him that the Council did * not desire to accept it. Cr. J. W. Bean!and' sai<d that the Council was not bound to lind a playground tor all the children. That was the jiducation Board's duty. It would be wasting the ratepayers' money to do anything at present. Cr. M. E. Lyons said that there should bo small playgrounds scattered all round the City rather than concentrated in one area. Cr. T. H. LS utter field said that there were seldom many children at St. Albans Park. It was never overcrowded, and the same applied to the Pluilipstown playgrouuu. Cr. A. E. Armstrong said that any offer of land for a further playground should be seriously considered by the Council. A Eeport. Suggested. Cr. H. T. J. Thacker said that the Reserves Committee slpuld draw up a comprehensive report or playgrounds for children. The ever-increasing traffir in the streets demanded more plityi'lg areas for the children. Cr. E H. Andrews said that the Council had already done a great deal to_ encourage the estabPshment of children's playgrounds in the City. It had given subsidies lot the work. The St Albans ground was never fi'led to capacity and the Bnrr;n™t;or) street mea was also little us>e.i tip the plavToiwds were to be increased they should be smaller and further apart. The report was adopted.
