PAPANUI BEAUTIFYING ASSOCIATION.
* ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Papanui Beautifying Association was held last night, Mr J. Sturrook presiding over a fair attendance. The annual report stated that owing to the period of depression the activities of the society had not been so great as in previous years. The usual garden competition had been held, and had aroused interest in the district. The judge (Mr F. Jones) had remarked on the great improvement in the gardens, and the large number of low fences seen in the district. An essay competition had also been held, and the essays were the best so far received. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £7 12s Id. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr H. Tillman; vice-president, Mr P. Jones; secretary, Miss M. Hodgson; treasurer, Mr E* Eggleston; auditor, Mr W, Baynes; delegates to Ohristchurch Beautifying Association, Messrs H. Tillman and J. Sturrock; Gommittee, Mesdames Eggleston, H. R. Smith, W. W. Taylor, Messrs F. Grubb, W. Baynes, A. Thorn, W. W. Taylor, J Sturrock, F. Moorhouse, and T. D. Lennie. Mr J. Sturrock moved that the proposal to seek the co-operation of the residents of Papanui toad in removing their high fences be strongly supportfed. Uniform low fences, he said, would bring to light a wealth of beautiful gardens, and the main road to the dls* trict would be the show street of New Zealand. In seconding the motion, Mr Eggleston- said he felt sure the idea would sooner or later receive support. Mr J. Baxter was thanked for gifts of native plants, and Mrs Eggleston and Miss Hodgson were thanked for their services as honorary collectors.
