NATIVE LAND COURT.
MR MEREDITH EXPLAINS. CPRTSS association TXLEGEAU.) AUCKLAND, July 19. With reference. to the withdrawal of the Crown Solicitor - (Mr Meredith) from the Native Land Court yesterday, Mr Meredith fully explained his attitude before he withdrew. He submitted that the enquiry should be confined to aspects of the Orakei land purchase mentioned by the Maoris in their petition. Approximately £IO,OOO had been paid the Maoris for the land, but thev were now suggesting ■ that when they received the money they also received a promise that the land for which they were being paid would be returned to them. He was prepared to consider' that contention, but if' any other matter were introduced he was prepared, after consulting the Native - Lands Department, to withdraw from the enquiry. Judge Acheson said that Mr Meredith. at a previous hearing, had agreed to consider other questions.
Mr Meredith denied this. When he withdrew, he was accompanied by the representatives of the Government Departments present.
