BISHOP CHERRINGTON.

PATRONAL FESTIVAL OF ST. AUGUSTINE. ■ (riost oro ow» coausrossnrc.) LONDON, Jane 5. The Bight Rev. C A. (Sherrington, Bishop of Waik&to, waa the special preacher'at, the patronal feast of §t.. Augustine's Churchy Blade Green, Erith; Bishop Cherrington had been staying with the Rev. E. B. Whalley, at the Vicarage, for a few days. The. Erith "Observer" has the following: On Sunday morning, therewas Holy Communion at 8 o'clock, at which there was a large number of communicants. At .11 a.m. there was Litany sung in procession, and Pontifical High Mass, the., sacred ministers being the Lord Bishop of Waikato (celebrant), the Rev. E. B. : Whalley, (deacon), and Mr B. Eccott (sub-deacon). The Bishop gave the discourse in the morning, and dealt with his diocese in New Zealand and its needs. In the afternoon, at the children's service, the Bishop again spoke. He told the congregation that he had been trying to steal their parish priest from them, and to get Father Whalley to go out to New Zealand. He (his Lordship) hoped that before his return in November he would have the joy of taking Father Whalley with him, or knowing that he was coming. The Bishop described the work among children in the diocese of Waikato, in which the children were greatly interested. In the evening, there was solemn evensong and procession. The Bishop was again the preacher, and he dealt o.n the life of St. Augustine, emphasising the factor of the Holy Spirit infusing life. He explained how it came that his friend their parish priest,. Father Whalley, came to be ordained, and referred to the work he had done in Slade Green in most laudatory terms. His Lordship drew an analogy between: the forming of a new parish, such as that of Slade Green, and the forming of a new diocese, such as that of Waikato. On Monday, St. Augustine's Day, there was High Mass and Procession at 10.30, when there was quite a good congregation. The Rev. Father Whalley was the celebrant, the Rev. Prfther Hancock, the deacon, the Rev. *G. K. Barnes, the sub-deaconl Each was vested in the Mass vestments. The Lord Bishop of Waikato was vested m cope and mitre, and was attended by the Rev. W. E. Bott.

Speaking from the words "For I have not shunned fo declare unto vou all the counsel of God" (Acts «., 27), the Lord Bishop of Waikato referred to the objects of their gathering! together on the patronal feast of their church, St. Augustine's.
