The Grey Hospital Board met 'this evening. Present: Messrs J. W. Hannan

(chairman), H. G. Barker, G. R. Harker, R. McTaggart, J. Bristow, J.. Mulcare, Rev. W. Bell, and Mr ß O'Brien. Before commencing the ordinary business the chairman referred to the death or. Air E. Ashton, tf member of the Board, and one who had taken a very keen interest in the Old People's Home. On the motion of the chairman the sincere sympathy of the Board was extended to Mr Ashton'a son and daughter.

Mr H. G. Carter was appointed to represent the Board at the meeting of tiie Advisory Board in regard to tuberculosis. This meeting is to bo held on August 11th at Christchurch. The Department of Health advised that £4340 had been placed to the credit of the Board. It was resolved to support the pro'test by the Waipukurau Hospital Board against the proposal of the Government to allow no subsidy on voluntary contributions during the present financial year. The Board's estimates for 1930-31 were approved by the Health Department. The matron reported that Nurses Daly, Hoffman, and Norris had resigned. She had been unable to .engage extra nurses owing to there being no room to house them, the present accommodation being already overtaxed. The laboratory sister reported that during the month 184 specimens had been dealt with, the total fees amounting to £125 14s.

Mr McTaggart again emphasised the necessity for getting more nurses to allow those at present on duty a day off per week, for general health reasons. A eottage should be secured near the hospital for housing the additional nurses. It was stated that the matron did not favour housing the nurses outside the hospital grounds. It was decided to procure a cottage suitable for the purpose and have a senior nurse in charge of it.

On the recommendation of the Medical Superintendent it was decided that Miss Phillips, Who is to be assistant in the laboratory, be sent to Christchurch for six months' training, and that Sister Braidwood, sister in charge of the laboratory, be sent to Christchurch for a fortnight's special training. It was resolved that the Board recommend the Borough Council to raise a loan of' £15,000 for the purpose of improving the. borough, water supply, tho present service obtainable at the hospital beiug altogether inadequate for requirements. The chairman referred to remarks made at the last' meeting of the Greymouth Borough Council to certain figures supplied in tabular form to the "Greymouth Star," by the Mayor of Greymouth. These figures had apparently been prepared with intent to discredit the administration of the hospital. The chairman presented a return based on the official records of hospitals for the 1929 financial year. This showed that the maintenance of the Grey Hospital compared quite favourably with that of any other hospital in the Dominion. Regarding the Mayor's figures, showing how the levy collected, from the Greymouth Borough Council had increased year by year, the chairman pointed out that whereas when the present Medical Superintendent took over the Grey Hospital there were 33 occupied beds, there were now 115. The increased maintenance showed that tho

administration of the hospital was actually less per bed than previously, and was a matter of satisfaction to tho Board. He challenged the Mayor to state publicly what the maladministration and malpractices that he complained of were. The Rev. W. Bell, who is leaving the district, said as that would be his last meeting he wished to thank the Board for its courtesy to him during his term on it. A minute expressing appreciation of Mr Bell's service was unanimously recorded. Land Board. At the Westland Land Board's meeting yesterday afternoon, at Hokitika, an application for a timber-splitting area, on the Otira line, was the subject of a difference of opinion between two applicants. The Board decided to adjourn the applications till next meeting, the Board's ranger meanwhile to inspect the area in question, and report. Cyclist In Trouble. An accident happened at Three-milo bridge last evening. A motor-car, driven by Mr F. A. Kitchingham, was approaching from Hokitika when a lad rode across the road on a bicycle. To prevent running over the lad, the driver swung to the left, but Btruck the bicycle, throwing the lad off, and damaging the machine. The lad escaped serious injury. The car struck the railing of the bridge, which was partly carriod away, and tho car hung over the side of the bridge, but did not fall into the stream. The occupants of the car did not suffer any injury. Fire. At ha If-past two this afternoon fire gutted a five-roomed bungalow at Hokitika, owned and occupied by Gordon Bryant. Mrs Bryant had left the house a short time before the outbreak, which was discovered by a neighbour. The house and furniture were insured for £575.
