NORTH CANTERBURY.

RANGIORA. At Everybody's, Town Hall, this I evening, the thrilling mystery drama, | "The Hole in the Wall," will be shown. It is one of the most original and baffling mystery thrillers ever screened. In the leads are Claudette Colbert and G. P. Robinson. The next series of "The Collegians" will also bo screened. On Thursday, "The Hour of Fear" will be presented. Box plans are at the Bristol and day sales are at the Golden Gate. KAIKOURA. On Sunday evening an open car went, ever the bank on the western side of Greenburn hill and fell 200 ft. A youth was in charge of the car, which had. come from Nelson, the license showing the name of Arnold Morrison. He was tendered unconscious and removed to the hospital, his injuries being mostly; abrasions. The car was damaged beyorid repair. The Rev. W. O. Eobb (Blenheim) conducted a memorial service at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church on Sunday night, in memory of the late Rev. W.'McAra. He referred to Mr McAra's arrival in Auckland, and his long years of service in Kaikoura. Feeling referencb was also tnado respecting the death of Mrs P. 3lorris, the congregation standing in iilence as a mark of respect.

There was a largo attendance at the funeral of Mrs P. Morris on Friday afternoon, and many wreaths were forwarded. The Rev. F. Robertson conducted the service at the graveside. Fifteen cars were held up on the Oaro Saddle on Saturday, as a result cf a small slip, which was soon removed. A car- from Nelson was destroyed by Are.

OXFORD. At a football match at Oxford played •n June 28th, Cyril Mbiik, a son of J£r T. Monk, of Bexley, suffered an injury that waa not considered serious. He received medical attention at the tiynf, but later was relnoved to Brocklehurst HospitaL During the week his condition improved, but on Sunday morning lie was worse, and was operated npon, his condition causing some anxiety. . The quarterly meeting of the Oxford Methodist Church was held on Friday night. The Home Missionary (Mr H. J. Malcolm) presided, and there were sixteen officials present. Sympathetic reference was made to a member who had been sick. The membership returns showed 89 senior, 37 junior, and 34 infant members. The bal-anee-sheet revealed a deficit. Information. was given in regard, to the fortnight's mission in August, under the aqstticea of the several churches, to bp hell in the Salvation Army Hall. There was a very good attendance. The lucky spot waltz was won by Miss L. Cox and Mr R. Morris, and the Monte Carlo by Miss K. Fidler and Mr J. Carlyle. Music was supplied by Miss M. Sutherland (piano), and Mr S, Innes (violin), extras being played by Miss D. Smith and Mr- F. Evans. Messrs R. Sutherland ud 3X Milne were M.C.'s.

WEST MELTON. A. very pleasant gathering was held In the West Melton Hall, when thg, residents of West Melton and the surrounding districts met for the purpose of honouring the Walker family, who are about to leave the distiipt, Mr. A. At the time, of the Boer War the Waimsikariri Mounted Rifles were-formed, Mr Walker becoming their popular quarter-ttttter-sergeant, holding this position lot many years. Mr Walker bad also leni chairman of the Domain Board, as well as a director of the West Melton Saleyards Company, for a considerable time. In presenting Mr and, Mrs Walker, jun., with a well-filled wallet, Veference was made to the; admirable way in which they had always assisted in furthering the social lite of the. district. Master Cecil Walker "was the recipient of a fountain pen. The West MeHoa Social Club,,of, which .Mr Walker, jun., was a very active member, presented him with a travelling rug. The Miniature Rifle. Club, presented Mr Walker with a fountain pen. LINCOLN. A football match was played between Lincoln boys and Halswell bovs on Friday afternoon. The game in * win for the visitors the scores being Halswell 14, Lincoln 3. The fortnightly- social was held on Friday night 'in aid of Lincoln School funds. The' following were the prizewinners: Ladies, Mrs W. Hopley; men, Mr R. Mitchell.

DUVAUCHELLE. A meeting was held at the residence of Mrs Uren, with the object of forming a branch of the Women's Institute. Those present were Mesdames 1. .Mould, 11. Stewart, F. Lewthwaite, G. . Mould, G. Vogan, E. Smith, J. tfaines, E. Cusdin, J. Mould, A. Prich•s. Giddens, A. Cunningham, G. i aylor, W. 'O'Brien. L. Cairns, R. Donovan, J. Thacker, L. Kay, and G. Marsh; Misses M. Stewart, D. Moore, P Richfield, J. McKay, M. McKay, Fr.aser, E. Kay, and 0. Vogan. Miss (England), in a most interesting address, outlined the history and work °f Women's ■ Institute. She also exhibited some ■ splendid samples of work done by overseas' members. It was decided to form a branch of the Institute, and the following officers were elected;— President, Mrs T. Mould; vice-president, Mrs A. Prichard; secretary, Mrs T. L. Uren; treasurer, Mrs F. Lewthwaite; committee, Mesdames R. Stewart, G. Vogan, L. Kay, and Miss Fraser. It was deeded to hold meetings on the first Thursday of each month, the first to be held at the residence of Mrs Lewthwaite. A hearty vote of thanks to Miss Stops was carried unanimously.

HORORATA. • At the Hdrorata Hall a complimentary social was tendered to Mrs C. J. Morland by the local branch of the Plunket Society. The. afternoon was spent in games, and competitions. The latter were won by Mrs C. J. Morland, Mrs W. Thwaites, Mrs G, C. Derrett, and Mrs W. Stone. The president of the Hororata Plunket Society (Mrs H. M. Reeves) asked Mrs ■' Morland, who has been local secretary for ■ some years, and who is leaving Horprata to live in Christehurch, to accept a- silver * hot water jug in recognition* of her . valued help to the Society. All wished, her every happiness and prosperity in her new home. At a meeting of the local branch of the Plunket Society, Mrs J; Bajlagh was elected hon. secretary. A motion of sympathy with Mrs R. G. Keith in her illness: wa3 passed, and a similar motion waq passed in respect of Mrs G. L. Hight, who has been ill for several weeks.

SHEFFIELD. At the Litorary and Debating Club's, meeting at Sheffield, Mr Blackie presided over a good attendance. Several members gave leoturettes, which were interesting and instructive. GREENPARK, There was a fair attendance at the weekly social at Greenpark on Saturday evening, the competitions being won bj Mrs W. Newton (.Motukarara), Mrs H. .Thomas, and Messrs J. Stalker and "W. Kimber. The first prize for ladies was raven Dy Mts W. Hopley (Lincoln). Music for the .dance was supplied by Mrs A. H. Clark, extras being contributed by Miss M. Brown < Qhratchurch). and Mrs Marks. ~,.v . DARFIELD. The Memorial Hall was packed when a delightful concert, by, local..amateurs, in. aid of-the Bath fund, ■was given. The first half of the programme was provided by the "Malvern Moonbeams,'' with story and song. In the second part a comedy- in one act, "The Trysting Place," was given. Miss D. Robinson played the accompaniments. •After the ; concert a • Very successful dance was held. The musio ; was supplied by Mrs G. Cridge and Mr F. Smithy Extras were played by Messrs S. PREBBLETON. At the monthly meeting of the Mothers'' Union Mrs H. B. Jones presided: The president reported that arrangements' had 'bSen made for a combined meeting with the Leeston - held here., ig August, when a speaker from. Christchurch would give an address on "The New Testament." . Mrs Jones then introduced" : the speaker fotr the afternoon — Mrs Parr—who read an interesting paper on "The Story of St. Francis of Assisi." Mrs Parr afterwards delightedthose present by her reading of one of -the Little Plays of St. Francis, entitled "Sister Gold." A vote ot thanks to Mrs Parr concluded a pleasant rand helpful" meeting. In the Public Hall on Saturday evening a was-held in aid of the school funds. There, was a large at-tendance-and a pleasant time was fSpent . dancing to' music, supplied by .•Mr<iß.
