Forensic Olub. Tho subject, "That the 40 hours'week would solve the unemployment problem," debated by mombers of the local club this week, was productive of much interesting discussion. Tho winning side, Messrs J. S. Barr and E. Hullett, opposed the motion, and defeated Messrs F. H. R. Neville and G. W. Peters. Next week tho subject, "That immigration restriction should not be based on racial lines," will bo discussed by Messrs R. McLachlun, M. Willis, B. D. Watson, and R. H. Kovillc. Telephone Facilities. So far the recent conference with Mr R. J. Inder, Assistant Telegraph Engineer, has not borne fruit in tho shape of any concessions or improvements, but the secretary of tho Business Men's Association expects that an answer will be forthcoming shortly. Ladies' Hockey Club. The Redcliffs Ladies' Hockey Club was successful in one of its matches last Saturday, tho A team defeating Training College by 2 goals to nil. All tho team showed improved form, especially Miss Eula Shaw, the goal-keeper, who has been steadily improving during tho last few months. The B team, which is composed of new players, was defeated by Aza, although tho local side played well. Miss Mao Matthews, who has been playing centre forward for tho A team, and who is shortly to bo married, was the recipient of a travelling rug given by hor co-members on Tuesday evening. The Mayoress (Mrs W. 11. Nicholson), in making the presentation, paid a high tribute to the sterling qualities of Miss Matthews, both as a player and an energetic club member. No matches will be played this, afternoon, but all members are requested to attend at Linwood Park. Members of tho Lyttelton Club will also bo present. Billiards. The usual weekly "flying fifty" handicap billiard tournament was held in the Bowling Club pavilion on Wednesday evening. The results were as follows:—First round: H. Stoneman beat H. Bates, J. Caesar beat T. Whitfield, C. Forrest beat A. Graham, J. Browne beat H. C. Jamieson, T. Chambers boat C. Merry. J. Allen beat D. Richardson, K. Allen beat J. Martin, W. J. Hampton beat H. Bates, F. Barlow beat A. Graham, T. Whitfield beat H. Stoneman. Second round: J. Caesar beat H. Stoneman, C. Forrest beat J. Browne, T. Chambers beat J. Allen, K. Allen beat W. J. Hampton, T. Whitfield beat F. Barlow. Third round: J. Caesar beat C. Forrest, K. Allen beat T. Chambers. Semi-final: J. Caesar beat K. Allen. Final: J. Caesar beat T. Whitfield.

Lifeboat Institution. Mr C. Bowman presided over a good attendance at a meeting of the Lifeboat Institution. It was reported that a generous donor had bought the yacht that gained first prize for home industry at last year's -Winter Show and had presented it to the Institution for the purpose of being raffled for the benefit of the funds. It was decided to send a letter of thanks to the donor for his generous gift. It was reported that arrangements had been made for the sale of tickets by the members of the lnsti-i tution, and a letter was received from the Minister for Internal Affairs granting permission for the raffle to be held. A vote of thanks was passed to all the ladies who rendered assistance on

launching day, and to othera who had so willingly assisted in making the day a success. It was reported that arrangements were being made to have a moving picture of the launching of both the new and old boats. Good Templars. Tho Ever Onward Temple, 1.0. G.T., met this week, Bro. J. Graham, C.T., presiding. The S. J. W. announced that a silver gavel was to be given to the Juvenile Temple securing most points for indoor sports during the next quarter. Members were reminded of the Guest shield competition for which a gold medal was to bo awarded to the one who secured most new members before March 31st, 1931. Sisters J. and O. Sutton and Dennis Houghton were presented with attendance certificates, having completed twelve months' membership. The winners of the word-building competition held the previous week were:—Standard V. and over—Sisters J. Sutton 1, J. Darling 2. Standard IV. and tinder—Sisters L. Darling 1, Brother D. Houghton 2. Tho weekly meeting of tho Sumner Pride Juveniles was held in the Schoolroom of the Methodist Church, Sister B. Sexton presiding. It was decided that a letter of welcome be sent to the Rev, W. A. Orange. A vote of condolence w&s passed with the relatives of the late Rev. W. McAra. Sister T. Parsons was successful in winning both competitions held during the evening. It was reportod that various competitions would be held amongst the Juvenile Temples and it was hoped that every member would enter.
