UNEMPLOYMENT.
GRANT FOR RETURNED SOLDIERS. ACTIVITIES OF RESERVES COMMITTEE. The secretary: of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers'. Association : (Mr E. F. Willcocks) hasbeen advised thatthe National War Funds Council has made another grant of. £SOOO for the. relief of unemployment amongst returned, soldiers throughout the Dominion; ;and that from the Canteen Fund a similaT vote has-been made. The proportion in each case that will .come .to Christchureh, throughout the Canterbury Patriotic Fundj will tie between £730 and £BOO. This news' ife very welcome at the present juncture, Mr Willcocks told :a reporter yesterday; as the position in respect of' unemployment- amongst ex-ser-vice men is still pretty acute. There are between '4O and. 50 regular callers at' the office of the Association.. Some'o£ these men have had a fortnight's work, and have been put off so that a corresponding number may take their, place for a fortnight. The Reserves Committee of the City Council at present have 22 men' employed. on unemployment relief works, including nine returned soldiers. The chairwoman (Cr. Annie I. Fraer) told a reporter yesterday' that the work, in hand, comprises , the laying out of a re--
creation ground at Burwodd Park, treeplanting and-trimming willows on thq banks of the Efeathcote, tree-planting and thinning of.'plantations at Bottle Lake, and tree-planting ,at Banks ave-. nue. Works that, have - been- authorised and ; are to be put in hand shortly are: Improvements the Municipal golf links, putting in oriier and levelling an additional area at Woolston Park, and tree planting in several of the parks. Works that have been completed are: The. laying out of 'a recreation ground at the Buckley 's road reserve, and trenching the flower borders and shrubbery at,,Eichmond Park.
