SOUTH CANTERBURY.

TIMARU. PERSONAL. Mr D. Standage, manager of Chateau Tongariro, National Park, arrived in Timaru yesterday by the first express from the north. Sergeant W. P. Gilligan, of tho Timaru Station, will leavo to-day for Oamaru, whero ho will remain on relief duly for some weeks. Bankrupt Jeweller. Clement Lyall Dewar, jeweller, of Timaru, was adjudged bankrupt on his own petition yesterday afternoon. The meeting of creditors will be held on Thursday, July 17 th. Supreme Court Statistics. During the quarter ended June 30th, the Supreme Court was engaged on criminal cases on two days. True bills were returned in two cases, and no bills were also found in two cases. One person was acquitted. The prisoner in tho other case absconded from bail. Two divorces wore granted. Six debtors filed their petition in bankruptcy, and one debtor was adjudged bankrupt on creditors' petition. Fivo discharges were granted. Court fees,, including bankruptcy, £49 14s, administration £216 lis, etc., totalled £368 3s 9d. Two civil actions were commenced, one being a claim for £383 4s, tho other being an application to have partnership accounts stated which was settled out of Court. One civil case was tried, and a decision given.

Magistrate's Court Returns. Tho Magistrate's Court returns for the quarter ended June 30th show that 56 arrested males and one arrested female were dealt with. Tho number, of summonses issued total 158. There were five male and threo juvenilo offenders during tho quarter. Criminal fees amounted to £53 17s, and fines to £145 lis. Thirty-two criminal sittings were presided over by a Magistrate, by Justices of tho Peace. Twelve civil sittings were presided over by tho Magistrate. The total amount sued for was £3716 18s Hd, and the amount recovered £2056 3s 3d. During tho quarter 299 plaints, four distress warrants, 68 judgment summonses, and ono warrant of committal wore issued. Civil fees amounted to £257 13s. Licensing fees for tho quarter totalled £32 19s.

Timaru Ploughing Matcli. An ordinary meeting of the Timaru Ploughing Match Committee was held yesterday afternoon, Mr W. J. Bassctt presiding. Present: Messrs I. E. Hide, W, King, J. Nicol, W. S. Jones, J. E. Doak, C. H. Black, D. Devon, S. Squires, W. Blackwood, C. 11. Thomson, A. Eraser, J. F. K. Jamieson, A. Gibson, (J. E. Hide, J. Ilutton, and J. Parry. Letters were received from the following judges, stating their ability to be present at the forthcoming match:— Messrs E. M. Wilson, "W. Lotham, J. B. Lindsay, W. Skevington, J. C. Hay, C. E. Hay, and J. Wyllie.. Mr Clyde Carr, M.P., wrote accepting the invitation to present the prizes at the Ploughing match. Mr P. J. Eolleston also acknowledged his re-election as a patron of the Society. . The Salvation Army (Ensign E. Friberg) wrote asking if permission would be granted to collect at the Ploughing Match for their relief work. The letter was received. Mrs H. Connolly presented £2 2s aa a gift to the Ploughing Match. J. Storrier and Co. presented a £5 5s challenge cup. Mrs A. Eraser presented a cap for the winner of the Class C. The donations were received with thanks. Mr F. Squires moved, and Mr TV. Blackwood seconded: "That a man be eligible to plough, if he has been one month in the district.'» The motion w'as carried. . Mr J. F. K. Jamieson said that he had made arrangements for the Timaru Pipe Band to be in attendance at tho Match.

ORARI. A very enjoyable "kitchen evening" was hold at the residence of Mrs H. H. Silverton, Salt Water Creek, in honour of Miss Nola Wood, in view of her approaching marriage. Nearly thirty guests were entertained with music, dancing, and games. Miss Wood was the recipient of many useful prosents, and on her behalf Mr Edgar Shaw returned thanks. At the Orari Ladies' Miniature Biflo Club's weekly shoot, a trophy given by Mr T. H. Langford, Winchester, resulted in a tie between Mrs F. Priddle, Miss Kicly, and Miss M. Mason, and in the shoot-off, Miss Mason won. Weather conditions for June were very similar to those experienced during May. There had been a comparatively small fall of rain during the period, amounting only to 82 points, as compared with ,5.14 "inches during the same month last year. The heaviest fall was 20 points on May Ist, and a fall was recorded on ten days. Sunshine was registered locally on 25 days during the month. The highest temperature in the shade during the month was CO degrees on June 12th, while the lonrest was 40 degrees on both June 6th and 24th. The average temperature for tho month was only 46 degrees, a distinct drop as compared with that for last year of 50* degrees. Twenty-six frosts were recorded, the severest being 17. degrees on the *2oth. The rainfall to date this year amounts to 12.22 in. On tho eve of his approaching marriago Mr Edgar Shaw was presented with a silver tea service, the gift of the staff of the Dominion Motors, Timaru. At the monthly meeting of the Idlawyl Reading Club, there was a good attendance. , Three new members were elected. The following plays were read:—"The Dear Departed," by Stanley Houghton; "The Monkey's Paw," by W. W. Jacobs; and "Op o' My Thumb," by Frederick Fenn and Richard Prycc.

WAIMATE. The Waimate Hospital Committee met on Thursday, Mr W. Geddes presiding. The return of patients showed that 58 mates and S3 females had been treated during June. Mr Hayman, for the House Committee, recommended that, as the present duty kitchen was inadequate for the needs of the hospital, the spare room vacated the porter .be converted into a second duty kitchen, or else the fittings in the present kitchen be transferred to the • spare room., In regard to the telephone syslom, the steward reported that the.one (1-acidcd upon by the committee had not been installed because the doctors and be himself had later come to the conclusion that it would not give the service wanted. Dr. Shackleton aaid an extra duty kitchen was a ionjr felt want, and it was decided that tho spare room be made into one. The report was adopted.
