It is announced that already nearly £13,000 has changed hands between buyer ani artist at the Royal Academy, where more than 200 exhibits have been sold. The exhibition opened only three weeks ago. Tliis, an official at Burlington House says, is considerably more than last year, and if the standard is maintained the year 1930 will prove to be a bumper one. The biggest prices paid' so far have gone to Sir John Lavcry for "Tho Chess Players," and to Mr Charles Wheeler for his sculpture "Spring.''., Analysis given by tho "Morning Postart critic shows that of tho works with the red star, i.e., pictures sold, 106 are oil paintings, 27 water colours. 55 drawings'and prints, and 12 pieces of sculpture. Ten of the number have been purchased by the Chantrcy Trustees. These ar£: '"The Late Dame Millicent Faweett" (Mrs Annie Swynnerfcon), "From My Bedroom Window" (Mr A. J. Munnings), "Cordelia" (Mr Walter W. Russell), "Tlie Chess Players" (Sir John Lavery), "The Late Sir Robert Lorimer, A.R. A., as a Boy" (Mr John <H; Lorimer), "The Artist's Mother"... (Mr Fiddes Watt), "PaddJers," a water colour by Mr P. Wilson Steer, and two pieces, of sculpture, " Spring—statuette, bronae," by-Mr Charles Wheeler, and "Autumn —statuette, carved in ivory," by Mr Richard Garbe.

Five of the works bought are by fhembers of the Royal Academy, and five by "outsiders." Outstanding paintings purchased by privato buyers include excellent landscapes, such as "Autumn" (Mr Arnesby Brown), Mr Richard Jack's "Cathedral Mountain from Lake O'Hara," "The Spey, Fochabers" (Mr S. J. Lamorna Birch), Mr Reginald G. Brundit's splendid "The Devil's Bridge," and Mr H. Bush : s freshly visualised and admirably painted "The Wayside Tree." Dame Laura Knight's largest and best work, the "Ballet Girl and Dressmaker," also has found a .buyer, as have other pictures by her. The Chantrey Trustees have purchased Mr Robert Austin's delightful "Bain de Pied," which was shown at the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours.
