CHIEF OP POLICE.
A TEMPORARY APPOINTMENT. [THE PRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, July 3. The prediction that Mr E. P. Ward, Under-Secretary of the Justice Department, would be appointed to take over the duties of Commissioner of Police, was confirmed to-day in an announcement by the Minister for Justice, the Hon. J. G. Cobbe. In notifying Mr Ward's appointment, the Minister said he desired to make it clear that the appointment, was being made as a temporary expedient pending the selection of a permanent successor to Mr Mcllvenfey. The Minister added that the officer holding the position of Under-Secretary of Justice had on previous occasions also held the post of Commissioner of Police. It was not intended that the Under-Secre-tary should continue indefinitely as Coirimissioner. ■ ■
