NORTH CANTERBURY.

RANGIORA. At Tuesday night's play in the Friendly Societies' tournament for the McPhail cards cup, the Druids, with 480 points, beat the Manchester Unity Oddfellows, 470. In a friendly game the M.U. Oddfellows beat the Foresters. On Monday evening the local troop of Life-Saving Guards entertained the Boy Scouts at a social in the Templar Hall. An cnjoyablo time was spent with games and competitions. A euchre party and dance was held on Monday evening in aid of the funds of the forthcoming Anglican Church bazaar. There was a very largo attendance, and a substantial sum was raised. Owing to several other attractions the weekly card social, held on Tuesday evening in aid of the school grounds improvement fund, was not so well attended as usual. There was, however, an attendance of about thirty. The prize for the evening waa won by Miss Doggett. The following are the vital statistics for the Rangiora registration district for June. Those in parentheses are for the corresponding month of 1929: Deaths, 4 (4); marriages, 1 (5). KAIKOURA. There was a good attendance afc the meeting of the Hockey Club, held at the residence of Mrs Cant, on Tuesday. Miss D. Pluck tendered her resignation as secretary owing to illhealth. and Mrs Cant undertook to carry out the duties. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Cant. Afc the Suburban Hall on Tuesday night there was an attendance of about. 50 at the weekly card and dance social. Mrs L. Garrett won the ladies' prize, with .25 points, Mrs W. A. Hall and Mrs it. Gibson being equal for second with 21 points, and in the playoff the former won. Mr Frank Lawson was the winner of the men's prize, with 21 points, Messrs J. Taylor, J. Eaton, and H. Tombs being equal with 23 points for second. The latter won in the play-off. Mrs 11. Chapman and Misses M. and E. Warcham supplied the dance music. The annual meeting of parishioners of the Anglican Church was held on Tuesday night, tho Rev, W. W. Bedwill, vicar, presiding over a moderato attendance. Tho secretary and treasurer (Mr R. Gibson) read the balancesheet, which showed the receipts to have been £477 10s lid, and tho expenditure £475 6s 4d, leaving a credit balance of £2 4s 7d. On the motion of Mr T. Hitchcock, tho balancesheet was adopted The vicar, in his report, thanked parishioners for their loyalty and support during tho year, and made feeling reference to those who had died during the year —Messrs T. Harle, J. LI. Barratt, 11. Comer, and T. Boyd—and extended sympathy to their relatives. Ho expressed thanks to tho voluntary workers of tho church, the _ choir, organist, and assistant organist, to tho warders and vestrymen, and to all who had assisted in tho work of tho church. Special praise was given to tho Women's Guild, which had done wonderful work and been of immense assistance. Tho Foreign Mission work had been carried out successfully, £23 IDs having forwarded to tho Bishop. Mr E. Gray was appointed vicar's warden, Mr W. Harle, people's warden, and Mr R. Gibson, secretary and treasurer. Tho following were appointed vestrymen :—Messrs P. Morris, F. H; Warner, O. Stanford. F. Barnes, F. Ilavwaid, G. Blackler, F. Belcher, and R. Gibson. Country associate members were appointed as follows: — Messrs J. C. Borthwiek, W. J. Trolove, R. ' Register, A. Howard, and P. J. Boyd. Mr A. Gooch was appointed auditor, and a vote of thanks was accorded him for past services. Mr W. J. Trolovo was elected synodsman. Following is tho weather report for Kaikoura for June :—Total rainfall 2.09 inches on thirteen days, the maximum fall being on Juno 10th, when 52 points fell. In June last year thero was a fall of 5.86 inches, on eight days, with a maximum fall of 3.90 inches on the 19th. At the invitation of tho Presbyterian Women's Club. Mr R. M. Laing, M.A., B.Se., of Christcliiirch. gave an address at St. Paul's Hall on Tuesday night, on "Tho League of Nations." Thero was a good attendance, the Rev. F. Robertson 8.A.. presiding. The lecturer gave an interesting address, traversing the work of. tho League from its inception, and he referred to tho beneficial results accruing as a result of the League's efforts. He was listened to with keen interest, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. There was a fair attendance at tho fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Heart of Oak Lodtze on Tuesday evening, the meetiiur liein" presided over by tho N.G., Bro. D D'>vle. Sick pay and accounts were nassed for payment. It was decided to hold a of instruction on Monday eveni""s precpdine tho usual meeting. Bro. V. Hinzbes the chair of L.S N G-. and Bro. Dnvies was nooointed to the vacancy. Bro. Hushes and Bro. A. Gibson were elected conductors for tho ensuing term. CHEVIOT. There was a large attendance at the second of tho series of card parties arranged •by the 'Mackenzie School Committee in aid of the school funds. The highest scorers in the euchre tournament were Miss Ivy McKnight and Mr L. H. Prtiden. Aggregate prizes are to be awarded at the end of the series. Arrangements have been completed for a grand carnival ball in aid of the school funds. SOUTHBROOK. Miss I). Withers,- who is leaving Southbrook, was tendered a farewell social by members of the Methodist congregation and friends on Tuesday evening. The Rev. S. Henderson presided. The evening was spent in games and competitions and a programme of vocal and other items was contributed to by Mesdames E. D. Withers and J. Morris, Misses M. Thwaites, J. Williamson, and S. Griffiths, and Masters R. S. and Lloyd Thwaites. On behalf of the congregation, Mr O. R. Thwaites presented tho guest with a handbag and purse. Mrs J. Morris, on behalf of Miss Withers', thanked the friends for the gifts.
