ATHLETIC AND CYCLING UNION.

NORTH CANTERBURY UNION. ' A meeting of the North Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union was held last night, when the following were present: Messrs W. J. Walter (chairman), S. B. Kershaw, G. Henderson, W. F. Garrand, P. O. Crooke, W. C. Miller, W. Colo, G. E. Fergus, R. J. McLelland, T. P. O'Rourke, P. C. Vaughan, and P. C. Lucas (secretary). A letter was received from H. Watson asking the Centre to make the date of the Oamaru-Christehurch road race earlier. The request was made because he and another rider were going to Australia to compete in the Sydney-Melbourne road race, and if the race here was held on the date now ,set down, October 4th, it would mean they wou'd have very little time for the big Australian fixture. It would run them so close that they would not have time to ride over the course, which, he stated, was a particularly important thing. After discussion, it was decided to postpone the matter until next Wednesday night, when a further meeting of the Centre would be held, and all the details laid before delegates. . The Kowai Sports Club wrote stating that, owing to lack of support, it had been decided to wind up the affairs of the club, and that in future they would not be making application for a permit for Easter Monday or the Mid-Canterbury fixture. The chairman expressed his regret that the club was going out, as it was a live body. Ha suggested that a delegation wait, .on the club and try to get them to reconsider their decision. A motion to this effect was carried. Mr Forbes wrote from Oamaru stating that he thought they would be able to raiße the £SO needed in connexion with the OamnruChristehurch road race, but there was still a slight doubt about it. This matter was also deferred until the next meeting. It was decided to apply to tho Minister for Internal Affairs for permission to run an art union to raise funds for the big race. If permission is granted, a picture will be purchased and offered as first prize, the price of the art union tickets being sixpence each. A committee, comprising Messrs Kershaw, Walter, and Lucasi, is to mako the necessary arrangements for the purchase of the picture.
