M'LEAN INSTITUTE.

ENLARGING THE TRUST. • Specinl legislation has been promoted by the Board of Governors of the McLean Institute, the purpose of which is to enlarge the trust by giving the Institute certain powers in respect of the sale of "Holly Lea" and its furniture. Under the will of the late Allan McLean, this property in Manchester street north was set apart as a home tor aged and indigent gentlewomen, and is so used at present. The bill is open for public inspection at the office of the Institute in the Tramway Board's building, and at the Magistrate's Court. The preamble sets out that experience has shown that one of the effects of the disqualification from admission to the institution of those who are or who have been in the receipt of an old age pension, or of charitable aid, at any time during the three years prior to application for admission being made, has been to disqualify persons who, apart from that disquajification, belong to the particular class that the testator, by the tenor of his will, intended to benefit. These persons have been compelled by extreme poverty to apply either for an old age pension or for charitable aid. The operative clause designed to enlarge the trust so that it will apply to these persons contains a proviso that on admission such persons shall surrender their pension, or charitable aid, during the period they are in the institution. The preamble further sets out that the will of the late Allan McLean does not empower the Institute to sell "Holly Lee" and furniture, or part thereof, and that such power is desired in the event of an opportunity arising to acquire more suitable premises for the purposes of the Institute, or in the event of the Institute finding it advisable to erect more suitable premises on other institution lands. The operative clause gives the necessary power to-the Institute "to sell, dispose of, or exchange" all or any parts of "Holly Lea," or of the furniture or effects connected therewith. The man-, ner in which the proceeds of the sal?, or sales, are to be dealt with is specifically set out. A further clause empowers the Institute to declare that nny land held by it. not subject to the trusts in the will concerning the "Holly Lea" property, shall become subiect to such trusts. The Bill is to be introduced during the present session of Parliament.
