TRIBUTES FROM TEACHERS.

FAREWELL TO MR M. M'LEOD.

To say farewell to Mr M. McLeod, who is retiring from the position of Senior Inspector to the Canterbury Education Board, teachers and inspectors of the Srortb Canterbury Branch of the New Zealand Edncational Institute met last evening. At the same time a welcome was given to Mr J. S. McNeil, who is taking Mr McLc-od's position. Miss M. E. Harvey, President of the Women Teachers' Association, said they were all very sorry to fl have to say good-bye to Mr McLeod, who had been so well known to them all for four ana a half years. She had much pleasure, on behalf of the women teachers of Canterbury, in giving Airs McLeod a standard lamp. Mr J. W. Gamble, ou behalf of the Absistant Masters' Association, wished Mr.and Mrs McLeod many years of happiness. All assistant masters would rtfc.et the tact that Mr Mcliuou would no longer be coming to yisit them. He welcomed Mr McNeil, and wished him a very successful term of office. Mr J. E. Thwaites, president of the Headmasters' Association, said they all regretted deeply .«r McLeod's retire ment. Mr McLeod had been approachable, and had altfaya been eager to give help to those who asked him for it. Mr Thwaites hoped ?l>at Mr McNeil's term of office would be a long and pleasant one. Mr L. F, Pegler, president of the local branch of the Educational Institute, said he had had very pleasant associations with Mr McLeod, and could speak with no uncertain voice of the many qualities possessed by Mr McLeod as an inspector. Ho had shown himself to be a man of ambition and had done very well since lie entered tho profession. Mr McLeod was one _ of those inspectors who had been right through the mill. They parted from him with' siheere regret. Mr Pegler had not known Mr McNeil as long as he had known Mr McLeod, but Mr McNeil had shown himself to be a keen man, and a sympathetic one. The speaker felt sure that Mr McNeil would have a most pleasant career as the new Senior Inspector. On behalf of the teachers ht presented Mr McLeod with a leather-covered chair. Mrs- McLeod expressed her thanks for the lamp, and the many kind things said about her. Mr McLeod' said he was proud to'se<i so many present to say an official good: bye to him. His interest in education not cease because he had retired, and would not cease because he had retired. and nothing would give him greater pleasure than to try to run a school again. He thanked the teachers for the presents rocoived- by him and Mrs McLeod. He had enjoyed practically every minute of his work as a teacher, but had thought that he would not find an inspector's billet so interesting. This was so .to a certain extent, but as an inspector he had found i different interest -in studying new -mathods of teach* Ing, and the men who used . them. His work in Canterbury had been most •ant, and he hid • felt that be was al* ways in harmonv with the teachers.
