TIMARU.

THE WEATHER. Bright sunshine in Timaru yesterday was marred by a boisterous southerly wind which prevailed throughout the day.

Loyal Timaru Lodge. At the half-yearly meeting of the Loyal Timaru Lodge of Oddfellows Bro. George Dobier, N.G., presided over sixty-six members. Welcomes were extended to Prov. G. M. Bro. William Dempsey, who, with the other district officers, paid an official visit; to Bro. Hy. Gourley, District Grand Master of North Canterbury, and to visitors from Temuka and Morven Lodges. Eight new members were initiated, Bro- Peter Hanlin acting as conductor, and P.G., Bro Geo. Hay ward giving the charge. The sick report was very satisfactory. Eeports from the two juvenile lodges showed steady progress. The superintendent announced that the chaperon sisters had decided to celebrate the anniversary of the Girls' Lodge. Correspondence was received from the District relative to the various levies payable. These showed that this year the lodge would have to pay £287 7s 7d towards the consolidated funeral benefit fund. The election of officers for the ensuing term resulted as follows: —Noble Grand, Sister I. Harris; V.G., Bro. P. Hanlin; 1.P.N.G., Bro. G. Dobiei; E.S., Bro. T. Webb; Warden, Bro. E. Gourley giving tho installation address. P.P.G.M. Bro. A. Goodall, director of ceremonies, announced that this was the first time in the history of Manchester Unity in South Canterbury that a lady member had been raised to the highest office a lodge could confer on her. To mark the occasion Bro.Goodall, on behalf of several enthusiasts, presented Sister Harris with a beautiful robe. Sister Harris then knelt while F.P.G.M. Bro. Richard Earl placed on her head a handsome tiara as a symbol of authority, and pronounced tho official blessing. P.G. Bro. Chas. Fryer, whoso term of office has been completed, was presented with a Past Grand's jewel. Sister Ivy Harris, Noble Grand, in making the presentation, referred to Bro. Fryer's untiring, efiorts to promote Oddfellowship and tho many acts of self-denial he had exercised for the benefit of members.

The resignation of the secretary (Mr P. T. Knowles) owing to pressure of business was accepted with regret. It was decided that the society's title be altered to Timaru Horticultural Society. Owing to the success which had attended the recent chrysanthomum Bhow it was decided to hold four shows next year.

County Estimates. The following is a summary of the estimated receipts and expenditure for Levels County for the year ending March 31st, .1931: „ fi „_„ K Beceipts—General rates, £16,450; subsidy on rates, £2500; other revenue, £1636- refund from Main Highways Board' £4714; refund from local authorities £400; total £26,700. Expenditure—Levies: South Canterbury Hospital Board, £3300; Timaru Harbour Board, £2000; administration, £3600- Public Works, Main and secondary highways, £8498; materials, £1280; miscellaneous, £2122; riding roads, £4900; total, £25,700. The following are details of the estimated expenditure in the various ridings:— Otipua riding—Daniels's road £300; other roads, £I3BB. Seadown riding—Secondary highways: Pleasant Point road and Arowhenua road, £577; other roads, £IOSO. Waimataitai riding—Boiling Bidges road, £180; other roads, £1267. Pleasant ..Point riding—Sutherland's road, £360; Upper Levels Valley, £600; other roads, £924. Tengawai riding—Cleland's road £850; other roads, £1206. Claremont Biding—Armstrong's road, £4oo} other roads, £971.

GERALDINE. The annual meeting of delegates to the Geraldine County Miniature Eiflo Association was held, the president (Mr D. G. Cain) presiding. There were also present: Messrs 8. Northam and W. Tait (Bangitata Island), P. E. South (Orari Bridge), K. Quaid and G. Cain (Woodbury), B. McLeod (Clandeboye), W. M. Patrick (Gapes Valley), H. I'allinson and C. Burrows (Four Peaks), G. T. Cain (Peel Forest), Mesdames F. B. South and J. Wordsworth (Orari Bridge). The report stated the Association had had a very successful year, and thanked all who had helped. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £lB 18s. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The following officers were elected for the year: Patron, Colonel K. Mackenzie; president, Mr B. McLeod; vice-presidents, Messrs W. M. Patrick, H. H. Cain, and F. E. South; secretary, Mr J. Kennedy; committee, Messrs Shields, Mallinson, Parr, Bose, Cain, Fifield, Bisdee, Crotty, Surridge, Northam, Earl, F. Cain, Fergusson, and Mrs Wadsworth; target checkers, Messrs F. E. South, H. FAIRLIE. At the Fairlio Bine Club's weekly shoot the silver button for the week was won by B. Summerfield and a trophy was won by T. W. Close. The following were tho scores:—B. Summerfield 78, W. There was a good attendance at a meeting of those interested in the jubilee of the Fairlie school, which it is proposed to celebrate this year. Mr C. J. Talbot occupied tho chair, and said he thought the first step to take would be to form an ex-Pupils' Association, a small membership charge to be made. The money derived from the subscriptions could be used in helping to defray the cost of expenses incurred in the running of the function.. It was decided that an ex-Pupils' Association be formed, and that the subscription be 2s 6d. The question of a suitable date was discussed, and Christmas was decided on as the most suitable time of tho year for the celebrations, the actual days to be decided later. A committee was appointed for each decade to go through the school rolls for the purposo of tracing the whereabouts of as many ex-pupils as possible. WAIMATE. For tho purpose of raising money tho ladies of tho Waimato Plunket Society will hold a Jumble sale in Queen street to-morrow. Mr John Bitchener, M.P., chairman of the Waimato County Council, has been reappointed that body's reproprcsentative on tho Timaru High School Beard. Mr Bitchener has also been reelected chairman of the County Council for a further term. The Waimato Borough Council has given notice to strike the same rate For 1930-31 as that levied last year. There has been no alteration in tne borough rates for five years. There was a small attendance at the annual meeting of parishioners of »t. Augustine's Anglican Church, the vicar (Rev. Canon Cocks) presiding. Mr McDouall was elected people's warden and Dr. A. G. Pitts vicar's warden. Tho following vestry was appomte<l: Mesdames E. C. Studholme H. McLean, and H. Harrison, and Messrs J. B. Robinson, S. I. Fitch, N. A. Rattray, H. Mumford, Fletcher, F. Meyer, and A. Wood. It was decided to apply to tho Church Property Trustees for a loan for five years for a sum not exceeding £SOO, for the purpose of repairing the church, and if possible for paying off the remainder of the debt on the organ. That the finances of the. Waimate County have been well managed is evident from a review of the past year by the chairman (Mr J. Bitchener, M.P.), at the annual .meeting of the Waimate County Council Tho receiots for the year totalled £73,100 7s 9d, an increase of £26,662 over those of tho previous year's revenue, the increase being principally duo to revenue of £20,098 collected on the highway paving contract. The expenditure totalled £61,277 6s Bd, leaving a credit balance at March 31st of £11.823 Is Id, compared with a credit balance of £8296 19s 3d the previous year. The increase in the present credit balance over that of last year accrued largely through the Neuchatel Asphalte Company's deposit, amounting to £2OOO, on the paving contract. The relative balances, therefore, for the two years were approximately the same.

Cr. P. R. Woodhouse. at the meeting of the Waimate County Council on Wednesday, moved "That with reference to the South Canterbury Hospital Board's discussion on the use of the X-rav plant by chiropractors, and the Board's motion to secure such service from its equipment and staff as it may consider to bo in J the best interests of the public, this council, as one of the largest contributors, asks that in deciding what is in the best interests of the public, the Board will be guided in matters of health by the advice of their medical staff, whose training and Qualifications fit them to express a proper opinion." Cr. Lindsay seconded the motion, which was carried.

HILTON. A very successful social and fiance took place in the Hilton Hall, when the residents of the district met to honour Miss Nellie Charles, daughter of Mr and Mrs F. Charles, who is leaving Hilton to take up her residence in Auckland, in view of her approaching marriage to Mr J. Quirke of that city and son of Mr and Mrs W. Quirke, Orari. Many visitors were present from the surrounding districts, and the larce assemblage testified to the high esteem in which Miss Charles and her family are held by their neighbours and friends in the district. Mr T. Fletcher, on behalf of the many present, spoke highly of the guest's good qualities. She had always been very popular among thera and would be greatly missed. He wished her every happiness in the future and presented her with a wallet of notes Miss Charles was also the recipient of a handsome silver tea service from her friends at the farm. Messrs H. Pierce, T). Callanan, and B. Meredith also spoke, conveying best wishes. Mr F Charles suitably responded on his daughter's behalf. Dancing was enjoyed to music played by Messrs B. Meredith and T Charles, Misses A. O'Connor and O. Johnston. Messrs A. Fletcher.and D. Callanan contributed extras. Mr J. Tindall was M.C. Mr and Mrs F. Charles. Mr and Mrs T. Charles, and Mies Margaret Charles

will leave to-day for Auckland to bo present at the Quirke-Charles wedding, which is to take place next week.

GAPES VALLEY. The first meeting of tho General Committee of the recently-formed Gapes Valley Women's Institute was held, when Mrs A. H. Roberts (president) was in the chair. Others present wore Mesdaines P. Barker, A. McKenzie, W. Talbot, H. Knubley, Le Lievre, C. G. Hibbs (secretary), and Miss Ladbrooke. Miss Ruth Barker was elected a member of the Institute. Suggestions for programmes wero received, and after discussion programmes for several months were drawn up. Some members of the Orari Institute had offered to give a demonstration on country dancing at the next monthly meeting. An offer had been received from Mrs Martin, of Wellington, to give a sealingwax demonstration, and arrangements will be made later. ' Attention was drawn to Miss, Stops's return about June 11th, when Institute members would be invited to attend classes of instruction in handcrafts, which would be conducted in Geraldine for two days by Miss Stops. The next general meeting of the Institute will be held on Thursday, June 12th.

TEMUKA. The fortnightly meeting of the Waitea Rebekah Lodge, 1.0.0. F., was held, P.N.G. Sister Ludemann presiding, in the absence of the Noble Grand, over a good attendance. Correspondence was received from the Grand Lodge. The Lodge badges came to hand. The secretary of the social committee read the report of the last meeting of that committee, when arrangements had been made to hold another social. One candidate was balloted for, and will be initiated next lodge night. The result of a p*elet competition was as follows:-& ster Davis 1, Sister Hutchison 2, Sister Goodman 3. . Organised for the purpose ,of augmenting the funds of St. Josepu's Convent, a dance held in the Catholic Club rooms, on Wednesday evening, was attended by a large and enthusiastic number of young people. WINCHESTER. On "Wednesday cvenine Mr and Mrs L. H. Orbell entertained a number of young people at a delightful dance at their home in Winchester, in honour of their son Geoffrey, who is at present home on vacation from Otago University. Large bowls of chrysanthemums' and autumn-tinted foliage and light blue and gold streamers (Otago University colours) decorated the spacious dining-room, where dancing took place. Games and music were interspersed with dancing, and a very enjoyable time was spent. PEEL FOREST. ' On Wednesday night 24 players from the Peel Forest Cribbage Club journeyed to Arundel to try conclusions with the local club. An enjoyable contest resulted in a win for Peel Forest by 65 games to 58. Mr J. Patten, who was conveyed to the Timaru Hospital with a broken leg, is now doing as well as can bo expected. The wekas which were recently liberated in the bush seem to be adapting themselves to their new environment. Opossum trappers are looking forward to a good season. Opossums are fairly numerous this year, and are coming further down than usual.
