NUMBER PLATES.
LAST DAY OF ISSUE. BIG RUSH EXPECTED TO-MORROW. After to-morrow, it will be illegal for motor vehicles to appear on the road without the new number plates which are now on issue. During the past few days there has been a rush at the Chief Post Office by applicants, and an augmented staff has had to work at high pressure to attend to them. In order to give the public as much assistance as possible in preparing the necessary papers, an official ia on duty outside the counter behind which the clerks are engaged, and because of the questions he is called on to answer it cannot be said that he has a sine-
cure. Speaking to "Roadster" yesterday a Post Office official said that about 700 motorists were now applying daily for number plates, and the total number issued to date compared favourably with what were applied for at this time last year. ... „ It has been legal for the new number plates to be attached to vehicles since Sunday last, but up to the present not a great number have been seen on the streets. It is probable that of the 11,000 odd motor vehicles in the district a considerable proportion will not be put on the road until atter the winter months. In such a case there is no point in putting new plates on them, as a reduction is made in the fees according to the month or issue. ~ . Those who desire to use their cars durinp the week-end and who have not yet obtained the plates are reminder! that if they do not make apphcatiou for them to-day thev wilL have to do so to-morrow, when the Post Office closes at noon.
