COST ESTIMATED AT £6,000,000. CUNARD LINE PLACES CONTRACT. (vmrxs rassa taaocimoß—wt ojcme TxtECßAPa—carmiea*) (Beeeived May 29th, 9.8 pjn.) LONDON, May 28. The firm of John Brown, Ltd, Clydebank, has secured an order for the construction of a new Canard liner costing £6,000,000 for the express service between Channel ports and New York. The work of construction will provide employment for thousands, and will take at least three years. The engines will he of 600,000 horse-power. The liner will have an over-all length of 1000 feet, will carry 4000 passengers, and a crew of 800. [ln a forecast description of the giant Cunarder, the shipping correspondent of the London "Dally Telegraph" stated that the Vessel would displace 75,000 tons (11,000 tons more than the Majestic), and that the breadth would greatly exceed the 105 ft of the battle-cruiser Hood. Owing to the novel problems created by the stress and strain to which such an immense vessel driven by machinery of unprecedented power would be subjected, it was necessary to provide a very strong form of construction, in faot, it would he built as strongly as a battle-cruiser. It was stated that a minimum speed of 28 knots was being aimed at.- Despite such great engine power the new- liner would be free from vibration even when steaming at full speed. So far as safety at sea was concerned, a new standard would be set up.-The hull would be so split up -into -water-tight compartments that even after receiving extensive damage below the water-line the liner would remain afloat and seaworthy, and the lifeboat equipment would embody many novel features. The) accomodation for passengers would represent the last word'in eomfort and luxury.]
