Alexander Gooding, who was remanded -for medical attention when he appeared before the Court a few days ago on a charge of being an idle and disorderly person, again appeared at the Magistrate's Court yesterday before Messfs F. W. Watt and J. W. Bowden, J.P.'s. Senior-Sergeant H. Martin raid that the prison authorities had advised that Gooding was a little simple, but was mentally balanced. He was convicted and discharged, the Bench stating that they would givo him another . chance. Acclimatisation Society. The council of the Ashburton Acclimatisation Society met on Tuesday evening, when Mr W. H. Robinson was elected chairman for the ensuing year. The Department of Internal Affairs wrote asking for a report on t.ue native bird life in the district.' It was left in the hands, of the secretary . (Mr J. B. Nicoll) and Mr A. O. Pilbrow to draw up a report It was resolved to place an order with the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society for 30,000 rainbow trout fry, to be liberated in Lakes Camp and Roundabout, and 100,000 brown trout fry. The chairman reported that the society was making arrangements to strip a quantity of brown trout ova at Lake Heron, and if the scheme was successful the ova would be hatched at the South Canterbury hatchery. Owing to the menace to native bird life, it was resolved to request the Department of Internal Affairs .to. pro- j hibit the use of power or motor-boats J on any of the lakes in the society's district. It was decided to obtain a number of pheasants for liberation in the Rakaia riverbed. Reports on the recent deor-stalking j season were recevied from Messrs John [ Gundry (Staveley) and ■ E. Ponlington (Christchurch). Swimming Club's Concert. For the purpose of presenting the cups won during last season to their respective winners, a concert, organised by Mr A. C, Wilson's concert party, on behalf of the Ashburton East Swimming Club, was held on Tuesday evening. The programme was of a varied nature, those contributing items being Mesdames F. J. Chambers, A. L. Jones, Miss G. Bushell, and a number of her pupils, Messrs A. C. Wilson, F. J. Chambers, A. L. Jones, M. J. Burgess, and A. Todd. During the evening the president of the club (Mr F Curtis, sen.) presented the following cups.:— Barnett Cup, Miss V. Smith; Nicoll Cup, Miss F. Anderton; Curtis Cup, Mr J. Miller. He also presented the 100 yds Centre championship medal to Mr A. Bradford, and the 50yds ladies' Centre championship medal to Miss F. Anderton. Daphne and Hakatere Lodge BallAbout two hundred couples attended the combined annual ball conducted by the Hakatere and Daphne (Rebekah) Lodges, 1.0.0. F., on Tuesday night. About one hundred couples took part in the grand march, which was headed, by Sisters B. Ellis and J. Nish, Noble Grands of the lodges. Kindred lodges were officially represented. Music was provided by Mrs A. Mitchell's n>he?tr;i and extras were played by Mr Aschcn. Bros. J. Turnbull and A. Moore were M.C.'a. Army Band's Concert. The Ashburton Salvation Army.
