GREYMOUTH, May 2,

Mr J. L. Menzies, formerly headmaster of the Burwood School, arrived last evening to take up the position of headmaster of the Hokitika District High School. Mr J. Marshal], formerly chief clerk at tho local Railway Goods Office, who is paying a visit to Grcymouth, will return to Wellington to-morrow.

Mrs A. Mclntyre, accompanied by her grand-daughter, Mis 3 T. Newman, will leave to-morrow on a holiday visit to Dunedin and Invercargill.

Miss M. Kerridge, of the nursing staff of the King George Hospital, Eotorua, is visiting relatives at Waiuta. Mr K. Auld, who is leaving Rcefton on transfer, was last evening presented by Knox Church with a set of military brushes and a shaving mirror. Waimangaroa School. The Hon. H. Atmore, Minister for Education, has advised Mr Holland, M.P., that in October last a grant was approved for the erection of a new school at Waimangaroa, but the committee objected to rebuilding on the old site. Tho Nelson Education Board inspected another' site, and recommended the purchase of two*acres, which is part of the Westport Harbour Endowment Reserve. The Board has been authorised to proceed with erecting the uew school. West Coast Racing. The totalisator figures- for the West Coast Easter racing circuit were as follows: —Westport (two days) £,19,380 10s, Greymouth (two days) £16,209, Hokitika (two days) £11,807, Reef ton (one day) £8366 10s, ICumara (one day) £7097, total £63,460. Petrol Tax. An emphatic protest against the diversion of.any portion of the petrol tax from the improvement of the highways was made by Cr. F. A. Kitchingham prior to the conclusion of last evening's meeting of the Grcymouth Borough Council. He quoted the statement of the chairman of tho Main Highways Board, made at Greymouth, regarding a possible diversion, and moved that the Council records its protest, copies of the resolution to be sent to the Priirfo Minister and the member for Westland. The resolution was seconded by Cr, J. B. Kent, supported by tho Mayor, and carried.

Acclimatisation Society. The Westland Acclimatisation and Tourist Society met last evening in Hokitika, Mr A. N. Baker presiding. The Department of Internal Affairs forwarded a notice covering the shooting season for Westland, which opened yesterday. The secretary stated that as privato enterprise and the Society were seeking to establish pheasants in the district, those issuing licenses had been asked ,to-strike out of tho license permission to take pheasants. Meantime it was expected sportsmen would rospectj the request, as it was in their interests to, see the birds thoroughly established.

The Department advised, that the Society's share of opossum revenue for the. year amounted to £396 16s. The New Zealand Acclimatisation Societies' Association advised that a conference relative to deer control would be held in Christchurch on May 6th and 7th. The secretary was deputed' to attend the conference. A discussion ensued, in respect to various aspects ■ of deer control, and matters were left in the hands of the delegate.

The Conservator of Pish at Eotorua advised that the cost of-rainbow ova was 6s per thousand up, to 1,000,000, 5s per thousand above that number. It was decided to order half a million ova, to be divided with; the Grey Society. Reference was made to a suggestion regarding the stocking of Lake Mapourika with rainbow trout. The secretary was directed to communicate with the Tourist Department regarding the supply of froe ova, which the Society would undertake to hatch and liberate. "
