CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION.

ANNUAL MEETING.

The competitions for the 1929 season conducted by the Canterbury Hockey Association were all keenly contested, according to the annual report submitted to last night s thirty-second annual meeting ot the Association, and the finances are in a slightly better state than they were last year. , Mr L. b. Smith presided at last nignt s meeting, which was well attended. _ The report stated further that during the 1929 season more players were reglsterea than in any other season since the commence*■ jnent of the game in Canterbury. ,^. plea ®'"s feature of the lower grade competitions was that the clubs which fostered the l' oll "S c . r players won their various grades. , ° i tional playing areas had boen procured at Elmwood Park and the Simeon street reserve, and the Trinity Club bad secured an excellent ground at Lyttelton. Still further efforts were made to persuade more seconuary schools to enter teams in the competitions, but the committee regretted to report tna* its efforts were unsuccessful, although it was quite possible that St. Androw's College would enter during the coming season, in spite of tho record entry of twenty ( teams in three grades, the primary schools pompetition could not be termed an unqualified success. That was chiefly due to the lacs of Interest on the part of the clubs, w "°» with two or threo exceptions, failed signally to assist the committee in the work among the boys. Nothing further had been done towards forming a sub-aesociation in MidCanterbury, although clubs were formed at Ashburton, Eakaia, and Methven. The Judioiary Committee was called together far too many times, especially for offences by young players, ana it was hoped that in the future olubs would take firmer control of their members. . . The result of the Australian tour showed a small lass financially, amounting to si 2h 6d, while expenditure on representative fixtures amountod to £lB 4s Od. After providing for depreciation on equipment, a sum of £25 4s 8d had been transferred to the general fund, making a total of X4B J0« 7d now at credit. The sura of X4O had been expended on soboolboys' sticks. ■ ... The report and balance-sheet were adopted.
