SUPERVISION ASKED FOR.
HOSPITAL OUTPATIENTS* DEPARTMENT.
That a surgical registrar be appointed to talcs control of and supervise the out-patients' department at the Public Hospital, was a proposal that the Hospital Committee placed before the North Canterbury Hospital Board at yesterday's meeting. It was withdrawn on the score of expense, however, before the Board came to consider it.
The Hospital Committee's report showed that a report#, had been received from the Medical Superintendent of the hospital, regarding the staffing of the out-patients' department, and the Board was recommended to adopt the following: "That a registrar be appointed. The duties being to undertake and supervise the surgical wards, the surgical portion of the outpatients' department, including th* work of the department recently undertaken by Dr. Will, and to supervise the massage department; tbtf salary to be £SOO, living in; the medical portion of the out-patients' department and medical wards to be under the supervision of the present Assistant Medical Superintendent." When the recommendation came before the full Board the chairman of the committee (Mr H. H. Holland) asked to be allowed to take it back to the committee for further consideration. ' Mr F. Horrell maintained that the hospital was already comparatively well served in the matter of staff. Auckland had twenty-foui 1 beds per doctor, Wellington twenty-six, and Canterbury eighteen and a half. "The farming community cannot stand the increase in rates that these things will mean," he added. "It is a most inopportune time to make the suggestion." "It is high time some improvement was made," observed Mrs T. Green. "There are too many things happening there, and some of them might be serious."
The proposal was referred again to the committee.
