OBITUARY.

MR H. D. CARTER. Mr H. D. Carter, whose death was recorded yesterday, was a mem lie r Of the well-known firm of Ivaye and Carter, merchants and shipping agents. Mr Carter was a native of Essex, and After spending four years there he came to Christehurch where he joined up with Mr Albert Kaye in establishing the firm which for many years was so well and favourably known. Mr Carter was of a retiring disposition, but did his share in the City's activities in an unostentatious way. and his generosity to deserving objects was beyond all praise. For many years he was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, and for 18 years he was president of the Prison Gate Mission. For an even longer period—2s years —he was on the vestry of St. Mary's, Merivale, where he was known to, and beloved of. the whole congregation. An ardent cricket enthusiast he was a vice-president of the old Midland Cricket Club, and also of the Canterbury Cricket Association. The game of cricket has had no more generous or whole-hearted sunporter in Christchurch than Mr Carter.

MR J. C. PRUDHOE

On Saturday last a former wellknown figure in Christchurcli public life, Mr J. C. Prudhoe, passed away at the age of 71 years. Mr Prudhoe was born in Durham, England, and arrived in New Zealand at the age of eighteen months. His father, Mr William Prudhoe, was one of the early Mayors of Chvistchurch. His first employment after leaving school was in the office of the Canterbury Provincial Education Department, which he left in 1876 to take a position with the New Zealand Government "Life Insurance Department', which was then in its earliest years, its quinquennial valuation being under way at the time. Before he was 26 he became District Manager for the Department and he held that position until he retired in May. 1917. Mr Prudhoe was always actively interested in the work of the Methodist Church in Christchurch, being present as a boy at the laying of the foundation stone of Durham street Church, and later occupying every position possible for a layman in connexion with the church. He was always particularly interested in church music, and for about four years he was organist and choirmaster at St. James's Church, Cashmere. Mr Prudhoe was connected with a great number of public activities in Christchurch. both before and after his retirement. He was associated with, among others, • the committees of the Patriotic Association, the Rannerdale Home, and the Nurse Maude Association, and for seven years he was chairman of the Cashmere Hills School Committee.

MR E. V. FOX. (ritSSS ASSOCIATION TZLEOIUM.) AUCKLAND, February 24. The death has occurred of Mr E. Y. Fox. The actress died at the local sanatorium, where Bhe had been sinking slowly. Lew Cody, her husband, who himself had just recovered from a nervous breakdown, was not at her bedside.
