MINER'S DEATH.

STRUCK BY FRICTION BRAKE. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TILEGRAM.) DAIIGAVILLE, February 14. Albert Nightingale, aged 29, of Hikurangi, member of a partnership of miners working the Avoca mine, was engaged operating an engine and friction-hauling winch, used to haul the coal-laden trucks to the top of the hill from the mine shaft, when the wire rope attached to the trucks became entangled round the spindle upon whicn the drum revolved. It is surmised that there was too much slack rope, which became taut again suddenly, and the friction of the brake jerked it upward. It struck Nightingale on the neck beneath the right ear, death being instantaneous. A medical man was called. At the inquest it was said that death could be caused in the manner explained, and the Coroner returned a verdict of accidental death. Deceased had only been married a short time. His parents reside at Whangarei.
