SOUTH ISLAND MOTOR UNION.

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. A meeting of the executive of the South Island Motor Union was held last night. Present—Messrs H. C. Harley (chairman), W. L. Minson, F. W. Johnston, J. L. Danks, R. H. Parker, W. R. Carey, F. W. Freeman, J. S. Hawkes, and P. K. Harman (secretary); Questions for the proposed conference on the Motor Regulations were referred to a committee with power to act, the committee consisting of Mr Hawkes, Mr Johnston, and the secretary. The following cable was received from the Auto Cycle Union (London): "Please cable if New Zealand would like ah opportunity of sending a representative motor cyclist to ride in Tourist Trophy races in mid June, if return passage for man and machine is provided free by us. Only cost to you would be £l3, covering insurance and medical .charges, plus sustenance when ashore."

The secretary had replied that this cable message had been referred to the New Zealand Auto Cycle Union. The meeting Considered this an excellent opportunity of which advantage should be taken, and it was unanimously decided that if the Auto Cycle Union of New Zealand will nominate a suitable man" the Motor Union will give up to £2O towards his expenses. The Canterburv Automobile Association wrote suggesting that the Transport Board be asked to\take up with the Railway Department the question $f railway erections and works in the vicinity of highways creating dangers, especially in regard to the mound near Wright's road at the Matipo street railway crossing erected in connexion with the new marshalling yards at Middleton. It was decided to forward the letter to the Railway Department. Following a discussion on the subject it was decided that a report be prepared for submission' at the next quarterly meeting of the Union in regard to the erection of outside signs indicating those hotels which are for the official list of hotels used ,by members of the Automobile Association. It was left to a committee to report to the quarterly meeting on the marking of main road routes. Mr Carey suggested that they should : ask the local bodies to consider the j matter of uniform traffic control indi-] cators. The one at the eorner of Colombo street and Moorhouse. avenue was instanced as an example of how the indicators should not be erected. It was decided that the matter should he brought forward as a remit at the next quarterly meeting of the Union.
