A Bill has been intrbduced t< provide for a referendum on May 3rd, at which the voting will be compulsory. Reform of the Legislative Council is to be proposed, and the voting will be on the Bill already passed. Labour members objected to the referendum, which they said would cost £70,000. At a time of financial stringency like this, they contended that the referendum could be taken" at the next election.

LOSSES ON RAILWAYS

The New South Wales railways have lost £BOO,OOO for the first seven months of the current financial year. The Treasurer expects a deficit of £1,500000 nt the end of June, which is half a million more than the previous year.

NEW SUGAR COMPANY. (Received February 12th, 9.50 p.m.) CAIRNS, February 12. A new company called Sangara Estates, Limited, has been registered at Moresby. It proposes to erect a mill and grow sugar at Sangara, Papua. The company expects to have two hundred thousand tons of sugar cane in sight in 1933.

NO CLUE TO MURDER. (Received February 12th, 9.50 p.m.) SYDNEY, February 12. The police have obtained no clue to the foreigner who murdered the Italian at Newtown railway station yesterday. "ALL-OUT" POLICY REJECTED. SYDNEY, February 12. It is understood that the rank and file of the Miners' Conference at Newcastle rejected a proposal to adopt an "all-out" policy at Itothbury Colliery. The Minister for Mines, referring to what can be earned at Roth bury, says that one miner made 62s 6d and a filler 42s 6d in one day.
