The enquiry into the riding o£ Peg- • inav in the Christmas Handicap, which •<vas commenced after that race on Thursday, was concluded after the King's Plate at Auckland yesterday. After hearing the evidence and explanation of thi" jockey, H. Gray, the stewards decided that no action was necessary. TROTTING NOTES. Acceptances lor the Westland T.C.'s annual meeting close on Thursday. The team of light harness horses that irent from Canterbury to contest events at the Auckland Trotting Club's meeting was not so strong as on some previous occasions, but though they failed to win a race on the first day they did much better on Saturday, for Writer, Young Blake', and Wrackler won races end Sir Author and Coneliff earned stake money. W. J. Tomkinson took five horses north, but so far Young Blake is the only one to earn a winning bracket. The progeny or the American mare Bertha Bell are well represented on the race tracks at the present time, for at Auckland Great Parrish, Peter Bingen, and Great Peter have .won stake money at each start, and at Ashburton Baron Bingen put up a creditable rUee. There wil! bo another in Great Nelson competing at Addington to-morrow, and his form will be watched with interest. For a mare to have five of her progeny racing at the one time is something •nt of the ordinary. "L. F. Berkett took Imprint and Dilworth to Auckland, and judging by the running at Addington last month both were expected to show up in their Northern engagements. Each up to the present has started but neither has been in the money, and it teems that both have trained off. On a fast track, however, IHI worth will do better than she did on the slow going she has experienced of late.

Trotting officials in Tasmania have made a number of innovations in an effort to make the sport more popular, and one is that a horse that does not reach the distance post by the time the race is finished shall be dealt with. At a recent meeting the registration of The Dolphin was suspended for 28 riays because he finished outside the distance post. The Scottsdale Cup at a Tasmanian trotting meeting recently was responsible for an unusual incident. The bell was rung a lap too soon, and Doll Parole, Junee, and Maori Childe were the placed horses. At the end of the succeeding lap the stewards held a lengthy enquiry and ordered the race t« be re-run, but Doll Parole, Junee, and Maori Childe did not take part. It waa after 5 o'clock'when the finish took place, and Don Patch won by a dozen vards from Nippem. who outstayed Maxim Direct by a yard. OWNER'S EXPLANATION ACCEPTED. (CXCTJEB nutss ASSOCIATION —BT ELECTRIC TILKOBAEH —COFTBX6HT.) (Received December 30th, 7.50 p.m.) SYDNEY, December 30. The stipendiary stewards have ac-" eepted the owner's (Mr Cowell's) explanation that Home Made developed soreness after Thursday's race; that he expected this would disappear in Saturday's run, and that he backed the horse himself.

! CANTERBURY PARK ! T.C. TO-MORROW'S PROGRAMME ! Of those on the limit, Scuttle's Ashburton running must make her one of the elect, and possibly King's Voyage will show improved form. Admiral Bingen, on 36 yards, is brilliant, without being solid, and Great Xelson, on 48 yards, appeals the more. A likely trio appears to be Great Nelson, Admiral Bingen, and Scuttle. 12.30 p.m.—TKMPLETON HANDICAP . m harneas), of 225 govs. 3.33 class. I Jm. Travis Axworthy appeals more than do Maiwhariti or Logan Chief on the limit of the handicap, but he has yet to prove himself a dyed-in-the-wool stayer, and a solidly run two miles may find him wanting. Daphne de Oro is as genuine as they are made, but she is right back with the cracks, and she will have to be at her best to have a chance. It is some tfme since Cardinal Logan won a race at Addington, and he appeals almost as much as Dundas Boy on the same mark. The latter, though he had trained off at the time of the New Zealand Cup, raced very well, and he has come on nicely during the past week or two. Though he is not a good beginner he is a rare stayer, and his chance looks second to none. Quality has not shown any outstanding ability for some time, and she may not be baek to her best form. Kingcraft, who showed some reluctance to leave the mark on his last appearance, is reported to have settled down, and is expected to put up a great race. Waitaki Girl appeals more than does Terence Dillon for the latter, now on 4.23, has been set the hardest raoe of his career. The finish may be fought out between Dundas Boy, Kingcraft, and Cardinal Logan.

The conditions were considerably better generally than those experienced on Boxing Da>. The results were not in favour of backers, Dueilona being the only actual favourite to score, while Imperial Prince, Royal Doulton, and Tenterdeu were all at good prices. The racing was again very keen, and nearly all the finishes were very close, the only easy win being that of King's Guard, who romped home in the Ponsonby Hurdles. One of the features of the racing was the success of H. Grey, who rode three winners and a second in five mounts. Twelve started in the Fergusson Handicap, and Richfield was an odds-on favourite, nearly twice as well backed as Greenaway, with Imperial Prince a moderately fancied fifth choice at a false price, which nearly reached double figures. Relation lost several lengths at the start, but ran through quickly on the inside to take up the running in a furlong from Tuku, Greenaway, knd Luminary. Xearing the turn, Tuku assumed command, and was first into the straight from Richfield, Relation, Luminary, Hreenaway, L!yn JDhu, and Imperial Prince. Once they straightened up Richfield headed the leader and looked like winning comfortably until Imperial Prince appeared on the inside less than a furlong from the post. Imperial Prince finished stoutly under pressure and got up to win by a head l'rom Richfield, who veered outwards under the whip in the last fifty yards. Greenaway was two lengths away third, and Luminary fourth, nest coming Tuku. Llyn Dhu. and Always. Richfield might have won if he had kept absolutely straight. Greenawav and Tuku again ran solid races, and might yet get a turn at the Meeting. The scratching of Eaglet left only three runners in the King's Plate, and Hunting Cry was a slightly better than even-money favourite. Toseuma was first to break the line from a good start, and when they were properly on the journey he was out two lengths from Historic (rails) and Hunting Cry. Four furlongs from home Historic was being kicked up to hold his position, and at the three Hunting Cry began to close slightly on Toxeuma. who was still over a length in front entering the straight. Huntin? Cry caught Toxeuma at the distance and came on to win nicely by a neck from Toxeuma. with Historic five lengths away third. Hunting Cry vrould probably have won a little easier only for his rider being content to keep him soil;;; with his hands and heels. H. Gray, who rode Hunting Cry, "was beiore th»» stewards in connexion with the Pegnway enquiry until a few minutes before starting time, and was accorded an ovation when he tame out to mount. The applause was renewed when he returned to the enclosure, and there is in doubt that he is still much of an idul with many of the racing public. A good pocl on the Ponsonby Hurdles saw Pangolin. King's Guard, and Importer at the head of the quotations. Prince Lu and Oatonian went out very fast, and they had the field strung out over fifty yards before crossing the second fence. Oatonian came down at the third fer.ee, leaving Prinr-e Lu clear of Pangel;:<. and Clockwork. With a ini!e covered King'? C*uard, who v.-as las; early, began to move up. and took fourth position at the seven furlong post. Four furlongs from home King's Guard ran up t<> Prince L-j. and at this stage Pangolin and Importer were the only others close enough to have a chance. King's Guard hetran to draw away at the home turn, and was never afterwards troubled to win very easily by seven lengths from Prince Lu, who defeated Importer by nine lengths. Pangolin was a moderate fourth, with the others badly beaten. King s Guard was an improved hor=e for his race on the first dar. and won with ridiculous ease. Prince 'Lu again showed a lot of dash, and Importer plodded solidly all the way. Paneolin made an improved showing, ahhrugh he pave no troubl#

He sreat punj at th-j end. Merry Mint, Luc.. R o ?e Vertigerr.. and Panther were all m it at 'th» distance pest, and Amor ran another of his solid races. Jaionx fell at the halfmile post. ... j j ■ _ Another good dividend was produced lithe Criterion Handicap. in which the moderately fancied Tenterden won narrowly from the hot favourite, Awaken, who was over twice as well backed as the .second fancv. Biddy's Boy. Tenterden was qu'cklv in front and led into the straight witU Open Cheque 'and Betterment in close attendance and then Hard V. ords, Awaken, Biddj s Bor. and Oil King. Tenterden held Ins own in 'the run to the judge and won by half ft length from Awaken, who detested ire rnetus" liv n similar margin. Nimble was fourth followed by Oil King and Betterment TentcrdPii showed fine speed, ana on well. Awaken ran a good race, and Tremetus finished solidly. Hard Words. Open Cheque, unc! Betterment all showed speed but oould not go on with it at the finish. Puelhmn was an odds-on favourite for the. Waitemata Handicap, over twice as well supported as Prince ot Orange, who had a fair call over Antique. Sea Song, Nassau Lady, and Pedestal were nrominent early, and were the leaders into the straight from Duellona, Prince of Orange, Thurnus, and Antique. Once in line for home Duellona ranged up on the outside of the leaders and came on to win by a neck from Nassau Lady, with Antique another neck away third. Prince of Orange, who put up r>lb over-weight to .secure the services of H. Goldfinch, was right up fourth, succeeded by Motere and Thurnus. Duellona was a class above tile others,. although she had little to spare at the finish. Nassau Lady was always in the picture, but Antique, who finished well, was badly placed early. Motere was in trouble at the half-mile post, but was running on at the finish. , ~ Great Star was a hot favourite for the Electric Handicap, having a very decided call over Cimabue and Knightlike. The inside horses, Great Star, Lady s Boy, Knightlike, and Cimabue, received several lengths the best of an uneven start, while Tea Time and Town Bird were badly left. Polyxena and Yallar ran through quickly to be m the lead at the end of two furlongs, and then Awarere went up on the outside. Awarere was first round the bend from Polyxena, Leitrim, Vallar, Cimabue, and. Knightlike. Leitrim had charge at the distance, but Knightlilte finished strongly and beat him by a head. Polyxena was two lengths away third, and Cimabue fourth, the next to finish being Awarere, Lady's Boy, and Taku Tama. Great Star dropped out quickly after going three furlongs, and finished well back. His form was too bad to be true. Knightlike finished well, hut was a shade lucky to beat Leitrim, who would have won if he had got away as well as the winner. Polyxena, vallar, and Awarere showed great speed, ana Awarere would have been very troublesome if he had been better drawn at the post. Cimabue ran another good race, but was steadied by his weight at the finish. Heavy wagering on the Plunket Handicap saw Goshawk, Royal Parade, and the Ti Tree-Le Choucas bracket best backed. Parade and Goshawk showed out first and then Hyde Park took charge from Lager Rose and King Midas. Hyde Park showed the way into the straight to King Midas, Gemlight, Eager Rose, Royal Parade, and Goshawk. Hyde Park held his own m the run home and won a good race by a neck from Goshawk, who finished well to beat King Emerald by half a length. Ti Tree was right up fourth, followed by Eager Rose and Royal Parade. The field carried the tapes of the barrier away, and as a result Le Choucas had his chance extinguished. Hyde Park was well ridden by H. Gray, and gave that rider his third winning mount for the day. Goshawk, King Emerald, and li Tree all finished well, Ti Tree coming from a good way back. Royal Parade was up 011 the outside at the furlong post, but weakened in the last half furlong.

NOTES ON THE RACING. The opening event was considered aa easy proposition for Loretta Napoleon, but he got in a bad position when going well at the end of three furlongs and fell. Fat Logan acted as pacemaker over the greater part of tho journey and led into the straight from Major Brent, Vican, Becky de Oro, and Silver Sea. In a close finish Vican got up to beat Becky de Oro by a length, with Pat Logan half a length away third. Bingen Wilkes headed the remainder. Major Brent got pocketed in the last fifty yards and was upset as the lino was crossed. The Progress Handicap, for trotters, was robbed of muoh interest by all the candidates breaking at some stage of the race. Childe Boy went away with a big lead on Avoness and Bonora, end this order was maintained throughout. Avoness appeared to have prospects of overhauling the leader on two occasions in the last circuit, but broke, and then finished on the better of the two to suffer defeat by three lengths. Childe Boy also left his feet at a critical stage half a mile from home, but quickly settled down again, and the advantage he held at the time stood to him over the finishing stages, as he was stopping badly at the post. Bonora was six lengths away, with another big break to Osgood. The lnanKahua Trotting Club Handicap attracted a good field, Vecto being made a one ticket better favourite than the bracket, Sedmere and Great Author. Warrenore opened up a big" break in the first circuit and entered tho last round well clear of Great Author, Vecto, «nd Black Wattle. The leader cried enough at the home turn, and Great Author led into the straight from Black Wattle, Warrenore. and Vecto. He was not troubled in the run to the post, slowing up to beat Black Wattle by four lengths. Warrenore was a similar distance away, well in front of Vecto and Lifebuoy. Investors went strongly for the Guy Den-ver-Netta Ora bracket in the Blackwater Handicap, but neither showed any signs of making a return. Hakari essayed to win from end to end. He led from the start and entered the straight ahead of Halswell yueen, Val Logan, Plying Kate, and Great Adveuture. who bunched inside tho distance. Halswell Queen finished on the best and cut down tho leader to beat him by two lengths. Val Logan was a close third, a head in front of Great Adventure, with Flying Knte next. . .

Avonness and Bonora disputed favouritism in the Big River Handicap, and they fought out a close finish. Tiny Author and Bonora had charge from Avonness half a mile from home, but the favourite broke, and Bonora led into the straight from Avonness and Tiny Author. Bonora and Avonness engaged in a neck-and-neck struggle in the run home. Bonora gaining the verdict by s length. Avonness broke in the last few strides, but Bonora had her measure at the time. Tiny Author was four lengths away, well in front of Chanret and Addie Guy. Avonness did not commence correctly, and put up a good fight under the circumstances. Speculation was widely distributed in the Alexander Handicap, the favourite. Ecstasy, paying a good price. She took charge entering upon the second circuit, and led into the straight from Loco. Black Wattle, and Happy Lass. Black Wattle threw out a determined challenge in the run home, but Ecstasy held her advantage to win decisively in two lengths. Loco wat; half a length back, in front of Happy Las.s Great Adventure, and Great Epsom. Halswell Queen, penalised £4yds for her earlier win. was the best supported in the Scotia Handicap, and she again prevailed sn a decisive manner. Warrenore was the pacemaker from the dispatch, and led until half a mile from home, where Halewel! Queen overhauled him and led into the straight from Warrenore, Silver Sea. and Leading Lady. The favourite finished fall of running and won comfortably by two lengths from Warrenore, who stayed on to beat Silver Sea by a length. Leading Lady and Val Losan were nest. The concluding event provided * some-, what easy victory for Loco, who led through-; out He was tackled by Ecstasy with half a mile to go, but beat the latter, who was! penalised for her previous win, by four) length" Tahoe was a similar distance away, in front of Becky de Oro. Flying Kate fell a: the start, and. although remounted, tailed the field throughout, while Myra Locanda got interfered with by Flying Kate Md w»f pulled up.
