COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY.
BRITAIN'S LEADERSHIPTHREATENED. (UNITED PES3S ASSOCIATION—BY ELFXTBIC TSLKGBAPH— COPYRIGHT.) (Received December 30th, 7.50 p.m.) LONDON, December 30. When delivering a New Year address at Canterbury Cathedral, the Archbishop of Canterbury said that the experience of the past year had shown that Britain's century-long leadership in commerce and industry was seriously threatened. Competitor# had arisen to supplant the British in markets where they thought their position was assured. More than a million were unemployed, and the future was clouded with uncertainty. Wise political and economic measures might provide partial remedies for the nation's sickness, but the cure could only come through restoring and reinvigorating the strength of the whole body. People were tending to rely too much on State aid instead of fulfilling their personal responsibilities.
