TLU was* followed by a high wind from the north-west, and the heat was very oppressive for the rest of the day. The annual inter-island cricket match in connexion with tiie Anglican Bible Class camp was commenced on Dudley Park on Saturday afternoon. The South Island team batted first and made 103. When stumps were drawn, the North Island had made r_'U lor three wickets. The match will be continued to-day. KAIAPOI. About: midnight on Saturday the Kaiapoi Fire Brigade was called out to a motor-ear fire in Fuller street. The car. a three-seater Overland, the property of Mr J. A. Armitage. Rolleston street, Lin wood, was a mass of flames when the Brigade arrived, and was badly damaged. The fire was caused through a lighted match _ being dropped alongside the car, igniting petrol, which was leaking from the tank. The car was valued at £IBO, and was insured in the Liverpool, London, and Globe Company for £l5O.

KAIKOURA. Leo Kellec, alias Charles Peter floss, was charged before Mr James Davidson, J.P., with theft at Culverden, last August, and also with theft at Wellington. He was remanded to appear at Christchurch on December 28th. Both St. Peter's and St. James's Churches were prettily decorated on Christmas Day. There were a good number of communicants. On Christmas Day, Mrs P. Adair, Hapuku, gave an afternoon in connexion with her Anglican Sunday school class, the children rendering songs and recitations. Prizes were distributed, and afternoon tea handed round. The Rev. W. W. Bedwell congratulated Mrs Adair on the excellent work she was doing in connexion with the church. The Rev. W. Friberg, a former vicar of Kaikoura, now at Leeston, is t< ( tnlro i-Vinrgfi of tho parish during the first three weeks of the New Year, and will no doubt be heartily wrelcomed bv his old friends. The boys of St. Peter's choir are to go into "camp at New Brighton on January '2nd, under the supervision of Mr Owen Stanford, of Oaro. Last year Mr Stanford took a party of boys j to Nelson and Picton. At Chat well, at the annual prize- | giving, a party was held at "Hawk Hills," the residence of Mr and Mrs J. C. Borthwick, when a pleasant time j was spent in tennis and games. After the prizes had been distributed. Mr Borthwick, on behalf of the people of the district, presented Miss M. C. Farrell with a beautiful handbag, and spoke appreciatively of her services as teacher, and expressed regret that she was leaving the district. Miss Farrell replied briefly. The parents and friends of the children attending the Glen Kowhai School assembled with the children for the annual distribution of prizes, when sports were held and sweets distributed Mr E. Burrows (chairman of the School Committee) complimented Miss Newport, the teacher, on her success in gaining proficiency certificates for her Standard VI. pupils. The profici°ncv certificates were awarded, prizes" distributed, and toys presented to all the little ones who were too voting to attend school. Mr P. Humm (secretary) explained the position regarding consolidation. Ml arrangements are complete lor the annual sports supervised by the Kaikoura Athletic and Cycling Club, to be held on New Years Day Gcoct entries have been received for the running, cycling, and busbmen's events, the 'prize money for which exceeds £IOO. Although there were not so many visitors to the district this year during the holidays, business people state that trade was up to the average, all reporting good business. The slip at Okarahia is now cleared sufficiently for clear traffic for cars north and south.

OXFORD. On the -whole, the vreather has been good for the holidays. On Christmas Day and Boxing Day there was a large influx of visitors to Ashley Gorge and neighbourhood, while the attendance of visitors at the Oxford Sports was probably a record. A good many visitors appear to be spending their holidays in Oxford. On account of the showery weather during the latter half of the month, shearing has been very much retarded, there being only two or three days on which the sheep were dry enough to shear. The moist weather, however, has brought on considerable vegetative growth, and the country is looking promising. Crops have revived, and turnips have been got in in favourable conditions. The Loans Board having given the Oxford County Council authority to take a poll for a loan of £4OOO for the purpose of erecting a Town Hall, a special meeting of the Council was held last week, to consider the matter. The architect was in attendance, and after the matter had been fully considered he was instructed to provide plans and estimates to be presented to a future meeting, so that the whole proposal mifht be put before meetings of ratepayers. As time goes on the ereeting of a'hall becomes more urgent. This was demonstrated on Boxing Night, when the hall was not large enough to accommodate those who wished to attend, while those who were fortunate in securing seats were inconveniently crowded.

SEFTON. A children's fancy dress ball was held on Friday evening in the Rink Hall under the auspices of the Sefton School Committee. Music was provided by the Sefton Jazz Band. The judges were Mr and Mrs R. McDonald, of Waikuku, and Mrs Hutchinson, of Stillwater Creek. For girb under eight the first prize went to Marion

Cameron and Shirley Hales and PeggyHales were judged equal for the second. For boys under eight the first prize was won by Peter McGowan and the second by Alee Petrie. For girls between 8 and 12 the first prize went to Bess Ford and the second to Louie Mehrtens, while the prize for boys between eight and 12 was won by Ashlev Hanna. For the girls' open class Nellie Lewis and Janet Banna gained the first and second prizes respectively, while for the boys of the same class the two prizes went to Raymond Hanna and William Peach. The ladies' prizes were awarded to Miss Milne (first) and to Mrs G. Hales (second), and the men's to Mr H. Hanna (first) and Mr A. Ashworth (second).

HORORATA. Special services held in St. John's Anglican Church on Christmas Day at 7.30 a.m. and 11 a.m. wer? well attended, and the church was suitably decorated. The services were conducted by the Rev. H. N. Roberts. A strong and unpleasant nor-west wind prevailed on Friday morning. About 2 o'clock in the afternoon the wind changed to the sou'-west, accompanied by rain, for an hour or more, when the weather cleared, although the sky remained overcast in the evening. However, little or no rain fell. Saturday was fine, with bright sunshine and an east wind blowing. Dr. Lester and Mr B. Lester (Sydnev), who have been visiting Mr J. Oliver, left for their home on Christmas Day. Mrs, Miss, and the Rev. H. X. Roberts leave to-day lor Sumner for a holiday. Miss D. Oliver is. visiting Hanmer. Mr and Mrs R. Keltie and family and Mrs Titer and family are spending a holiday in Sumner. Mr and Mrs Geary (Christ-church) are spending the holidays with Mr and Mrs M. Thorne.
