PERSONAL. Mr and Mrs E. B. Newton and familyreturned to Ashburton on Saturdayafter a trip to England and the Continent. Mr and Mrs W. J. Biackler t, Cromwell), who have been visiting friends in Ashburton, left for Timaru yesterday. Infectious Diseases. The Ashburton County and borough have been particularly free from infectious diseases during the past week. On'v one notification has been reported, it being a case of diphtheria from Mount iSomer*. Dance at Hakatere. A dauce conducted by the Hakatere Tennis Club was held in the Hakatere Hall on Saturday night. There was a •rood attendance," the music being supplied bv Miss M. Macdonald. Cards were played by the non-dancers. Cars Collide. While driving in his Whippet tourer north along Cross street, on Saturday eveuiug, -\Lr K. W. Barr, Allenton, collided w'ith a Buick car, driven by Mr -Velson, Cox street, Allentou, who was travelling west along Cox street. The collision occurred on tile intersection, the impact turning both cars in the opposite directions to which they were going. X'o one was injured, but thij right from member of the Whippet was badly twisted and the mudguard was crumpled. The rear wheel of the Buick collapsed and the mudguard was damaged.

Australian Swimmers' Visit. One of the best exhibitions of swimming ever witnessed in Ashburton was staged on Saturday night by the Ashburton Centre of the N.Z.A.S.A.. in honour of the visit of the Australian champions, Noel Ryan and Owen Griffiths. There was a "large attendance at tb« carnival, which was held in the Borough School baths. The outstanding event was the establishment of a new halfruile fresh water record for New Zealand, when Ryan covered the. distance in 11 min 30 2-oseo, which is 14 l-ssee. faster than the record put up by IX Lindsay in Christchurch. in March. 1928.

Griffiths equalled the New Zealand fresh water record for 440 yds, his time being umin 29sec. An instructive exhibition of swimming was given by Griffiths, while a troupe of Christchurch swimmers gave an interesting display of diving. Christchurch, Temuka, and Ashburton competitors took part, but the Australians did not compete in any of the events. With the. exception of a north-easter-ly wind, which blew diagonally across the courts, making play a little difficult at times, the weather was ideal for the fourth day of the Mid-Canterbury Lawn Tennis Sub-Association's Christmas tournament on Saturday. The final in the men's championship singles between M. Heenan and B. Carleton is yet to be played. G. Clark, who was one of the most successful competitors, had a strenuous day, having played in at least thirteen sets. In the last match against B. Carleton, for the semi-final of the men's singles championship, he had to retire. Results:— Handicaps—Men's doubles tinal: M. Heenan and S. Sullivan beat G. Clark and B. Carleton 9-7. Oirleton beat G. Clark 4-0, 6-2. Cricket. Ashburtou commenced its reprcneniaiive cricket season against Wellington colts on Saturday in no confident manner.
