SURF RESCUE.

MAN SAVED AT BRIGHTON. A narrow escape from drowning took place at New Brighton at about 10.30 a.m. yesterday, when a man got into difficulties while bathing. He was noticed by Carl Couldwell, who was on beach control, to be out of his depth and caught by a strong undertow. Couldwell immediately went to his aid, and although he had no reel or line, succeeded in bringing him to shore. The man, whose name is not known, was middle-aged, and of big build, nearly 16 stone in weight, but he was able to help himself to a certain extent, this aiding the patrolman's efforts. He did not require assistance when the shore was reached, and expressed his appreciation of Couldwell's action. The rescue was the ftrst one necessitated this season, and makes the eighth which Couldwell has carried out, since he has been patrolman.
