PLUNKET SHIELD.

AUCKLAND'S EASY WIN

;?R£SS ASSOCIATION TE LEG-RAM.}

AUCKLAND, December 26,

The Plunket Shield match between Auckland and Otago was concluded at Eden Park to-day, resulting in an easy win for Auckland, by an innings and 192 runs. At the conclusion of the previous day's play Auckland, in their first innings, had compiled 235 for six wickets, in reply to Otago's first innings total of 67. Continuing to-day, Auckland carried their score to 356. MI V/ who was 131 not out, added another o± before being dismissed toward the close of the innings. . Otago fared little better in their second innings than they did in the first, being again dismissed cheaply for 97 runs. Of this total Knight contributed 37, but his display was not inspiring. The bowling of Matheson, Wensley, and Anthony proved too good for the visitors. The first-named bowled splendidly, and finished with the fine average of four for 25. Wensley and Anthony were called upon to bowl under difficult conditions, but both acquitted themselves well. Rain fell at 3.30 p.m. and caused an adjournment for 45 minutes, but under the wet conditions Auckland were able to decide the issue before stumps. The last hour's plav on Wednesday saw Otago secure one more of the Auckland wickets, Garrard being dismissed when he had reached 58. Mills and Badeley carried on to stumps, the former having 131 to his credit, while the latter had scored 12.

Yesterday's Play. On resuming to-dav Dunning and Elmes took up the Otago attack, Badeley scoring a single off the former's first over, and driving him through the covers in the second. Elmes was troubling Mills, the second ball of his third over just missing the wicket after coming through low. Straight driving by Mills in Elmes's succeeding over took the total past the 250 mark. A double change was made in the bowling, Alloo taking over from Elmes, while Moloney replaced Dunning to send up enticing slows, which were treated with respect by both batsmen. Badeley lifted him into Vorrath's hands on the leg boundary, only to see the fieldsman misjudge the catch, but two balls later the same batsman was easily caught at point. Elliott started with a nicely-timed drive to the on for three. With the score at 77 Galland was given a chance with the ball in place of Moloney, the batsmen taking three singles off his first over. Mills hoisted his 150 off Alloo's next over with a strong pull to the square leg boundary, his runs having taken four hours 50 minutes to compile. He followed with a brace to leg and another four off tWo successive balls. Elliott was instrumental in putting 300 on the score board with a rfice four. The score had taken five hours 10 minutes. With the score board reading 317 for seven wickets, and the batsmen appearing at ease with the bowling, Knight and Dunning took over the attack, this being the former's first over. The change was effective, Elliott lifting Dunning in his first over to Zimmerman in the outfield, who held the catch well.

Mills Out. Matheson opened his account with a brace. Mills's great innings came to a close when he chopped a ball from Knight into Elmes's hands at second slip. His score of 185 had kept him five hours 40 lhinutes at the crease. Matheson and Rowntree batted merrily at. the finish, the former lifting Dunning out of the ground. Alloo replaced Knight and set three men on the boundary in an endeavour to trap Matheson. The pair put on 26 runs before Matheson was bowled by Moloney, the innings closing for 356 just prior to the luncheon adjournment. Otago Fail Again. With a first innings deficit of 289 Otago commenced their second innings with Knight and Vorrath against the bowling of Matheson and Wensley. Vorrath was soon found with his legs in front to a straight one from Matheson. McMullan, the incomer, was cleanbowled by the same bowler first ball. Zimmerman spoiled any chance of a "hat trick" by turning his first ball neatly to leg for a brace, but in Matheson's next over he was bowled by a beautiful length ball, whieh had him beaten all the way. Matheson's average at this stage read three for seven, the total being nine.

Cavanagh opened with a lucky snick through the slips and crossed to the other end, but could do nothing with Wensley, who had bowled four maidens in succession. Short singles past, square leg and through the slips raised the total to 23, when a swinger from Matheson got through Cavanagh's defence to bowl him. Alloo endeavoured to stem the rot. Wensley almost trapped Alloo off the third ball of his succeeding over, when the batsman placed an easy catch in Garrard's hands at first slip, but the chance was not accepted. With the object of resting Matheson Garrard substituted Anthony, and the new bowler commenced by sending down two maidens. A welltimed boundary and a brace to leg by Alloo hoisted 40 on the board after an hour's play. A period of very quiet play ensued in which six runs only were scored in 20 minutes. Wensley, who was persisting with a good length and an occasional swinger, was rewarded at last when he went right through Alloo 'a defence and bowled him. Elmes started unauspieiously with a lucky stroke past fine leg, but the pair managed to take the score to 50, when Elmes attempted to play Wensley with his pads and the ball rolled on the wicket. Galland did not survive his first ball, being caught neatly on the leg boundary by Badeley, who effected a fine running catch. The score at this stage was 50 for seven wickets. A slight stand between Dunning and Knight caused Garrard to bring Matheson on again, but the batsmen played confidently to the tea adjournment, which was taken early on account of light rain. A steady drizzle prevented play for some time, but a re-start was made at 4.30. The wicket had a good deal of surface moisture on,, and Wensley and Anthony, who had resumed the attack for Auckland, were troubling both batsmen. Off Wensley's second over the batsmen attempted a short run, but a misunderstanding ensued, Dunning being easily run out. Knight plodded on, scoring singles. After getting 37 Knight was given out Ibw to Anthony, the ball gathering pace off the wicket and coming through very low. A decision was given against
