WAIKUKU GALA.
AN ENJOYABLE OLTING
The Waikuku Beach Gala, which is | now an annual fixture, was held yester-1 day in fine weather. The gala was the most successful yet held, visitors coining j from all parts of Canterbury and Christchurch. During the year many i improvements have been effected at this seaside pleasure resort, and it is nowone of the most popular watering places in Canterbury. All the money raised by the galas is spent in improvements, and with the assistance of the Waikuku Domain Board much work is done every | year. Yesterday there were about 4000 j visitors at the beach, and the arrange- ! ments left nothing to be desired. There j were a large number of side-shows, all I of which were well patronised. There was a good sports programme, for whicll there were large entries, interest being centred in the Waikuku women's championship, of 75 yards, which was won by Miss D. Lvnskey. Great interest ' wa * also taken in the baby show, for which there were good entries, with the exception of the class for baby boys under six months, in which there were no entries. During the afternoon the Rangiora Band played an excellent programme of music. A Moth aeroplane circled over the grounds and dropped parachutes, one of which held a luckyj number. The children were not overlooked, for besides numerous races there was a lolly scramble. The gala was continued last evening, when a dance was held in the Beach Hall. The sum of £134 16s 3d was taken at the gates, as against £.llß last year. The stallholders' sales were also better than ins previous vears. The president (Mr Henry), s*ecretary (Mr W. C. ProsserK and executive are to be congratulated' on the very satisfactory way the gala was carried out.
