HALSWELL AMATEUR SPORTS CLUB.
TO THE EDITOB OF THE PKESS Sir,—l was surprised and astonished this morning when I visited the local store and saw a poster intimating that a sports meeting was to be held on Boxing Day in the local Domain. I had reconciled myself to the fact that there would be no sports meeting this year, ae no balance-sheet had been published since 1927, and the committee had not met since January, 1929. Imagine then my indignation when I was informed that an outside club had control over this meeting. Now, Mr Editor, don't you think it presumption nn ibc part of this club to come to Halswell and run, the local sports? I am sure I do, and so do ninety per cent, of the residents. "What is wrong with committees in Halswell ? For a number of years I have attended the local meeting, and looked forward to the day; not only to take an interest in the running and cycling, etc., but to meet old friends whom I see only on an occasion like this. I am afraid this year I will not be there, as I consider that when the local club cannot control their day's sport, local interest diminishes. As a oast supporter and a vice-president of the club, I am very sorry this state of affairs has come to pass.—Yours, etc., GOLDEN RULE. Halswell, December 14th. 1929. [An dffieial of the Canterbury Centre oi the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, when shown this letter, said that since the secretary of the Halswell Club had been seriously ill, it had been agreed between the Halswell and Papanui Clubs, that to prevent the meeting lapsing, the Papajiui Club should take control of it. If this were not done, he said. Halswell would hare difficulty in the future in retaining Boxing Day as the date of its meeting, as some other club may have been granted the same day. Moreover, the principal members of the Papanui Club are also prominent committeemen of the Halswell Club.]
