DR. C. CHILTON.
TRIBUTE FROM HIS OLD SCHOOL. Reference In -the death of Dr. C. Chilton, an old pupil of West Christchurch District High School, was made at last night's prize-giving ceremony of the school by the headmaster (Mr L. F. Pcgler). "His life-long association with the school is something of which we are all justly proud," said Mr Pegler. "As a school boy, as a muster, as a committeeman, as a chairman, ami as a friend to all, ho set an example which will be difficult to equal. His labours for the school throughout his busv life were unceasing." Mr R. Nairn, a fellow-pupil of Dr. Chilton at the school, said that, bv Dr. Chilton's death, they had lost a very good friend. Cr. Tlesher's Views. Cr. J. A. Fleshf-r said that tho cost of the ronioval of the buildings should be equitably adjusted. The department was a part of the Corporation, and its property had come out of the pockets of the ratepayers. He had no doubt that the department could be sold as a going concern to a public company, but that the Mayor would be the first man to turn round and blame such a company if it made the profits that the Department was now making. He thought that the Council had made a bad blunder when it sold the market site. The Mayor said that. Cr. Sullivan had impressed upon the agent that their idea was that the market should be closed down as soon as it could possibly be done. Cr. Sullivan said that what they had in mind was the provision of rest rooms women ar.d children. Cr. Thaekjr agTeed to withdraw the second portion of his amendment, and as amended it was referred to the committee to enable the information asked for to be Bupplied.
