Picnics. Yesterday a party of 60 secondary pupils of the Sumner District High School spent a 1 pleasant outing at Diamond Harbour. A party j of about fifty from the Aranui School spent the day at Corsair Bay. Christmas Tree Party. The children of the infants' department of the Lyttelton District High School and their parents will he entertained at a Christmas tree party this afternoon. There will be a Christmas tree ■ and Father Christmas vri'A distribute gifts. Harbour Light Theatre. "His Captive Woman," starring Milton Sills, and "The Rejuvenation of Aunt Mary," featuring May Robson and Phyllis Haver, will be repeated at the Harbour Light Theatre to-night. To-morrow, "Speedy," a Harold Lloyd comedy in which laughs abound, will be screened, together with two comedies and a gazette. Launch Trials, Trials were held yesterday of the Reomoana, one of the Lyttelton Ferry Launches' large passenger launches, which has been fitted with an engine specially imported from England. The engine is a Kelvin 4-cylinder, and is rated at 25 horse-power. It is of special interest because it is of the sleevevalve type, being almost silent. The trials proved most satisfactory, and a good speed was attained. Maternity Ward. The chairman (Mr H. J. Otiey) and members of the North Canterbury Hospital Board recently visited Lyttelton and inspected the site of the proposed new maternity ward. They were accompanied by Dr. B. H." Gilmour, Mr F. G. Norton, the local member of the Board, and by Mr H. H. Barnard, borough engineer. 1 The site selected is on the Board's propertv j at West Lyttelton, where the Orphanage was situated for many years, and is in front of the Te Whaka tennis courts. It was decided that the building should be a two-storey one. and the plans will be drawn up later. Magistrate's Court. Messrs F. E. Sutton and F. G. Norton. J.P.'s. presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Charles William Riehman. a member of the crew of the steamer Mania, pleaded guilty to charges of using obscene language, and of wilfully damaging three panes of glass, valued at £6 19s, the property of Robert Hempstalk. It was stated that the offences were the result of a fracas outside a restaurant in Norwich ■Quay on Saturday night. On the first charge accused was convicted and fined A's, in default one month's imprisonment. On the charee of breaking the windows he was ordered to pay the amount of damage, in default one month's imprisonment. For obstructing a constable in tli» execution of his duty.
