BOWLING.

NEW BRIGHTON CLUB. The New Brighton Bowling Club opened it* sixteenth season's pl«y on Saturday afternoon, under perfect weather conditions. There was a large attendance of both players and spectators. Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., and Mr D. E. Wood, president of the Centre, were amongst the present daring the afternoon, while Mr A. W. Owles, a past patron and president of the clsb, although in very Indifferent health, was present during the official part of the pro ceedings. In extending a very cordial welcome to the large number present, the president (Mr 6. W. Bishop) said the club had been favoured with glorious sunshine for its opening function, and in spite of the boycott in having so many of the women present. He was more than gratified to see that practically every elub in the district was represented, and also the president and secretary of the. Centre. Mr Bishop took advantage of the occasion to congratulate especially Mr D. E. Wood on his appointment to president of the Centre. The MayoT (Mr J. H. Shaw), on behalf of the borough, extended a very hearty welcome to the visitors. The Bowling Club, he was satisfied, was doing something to enhance the Popularity of the borough In congratulating the club upon the trim appearance of the green and their property generally, Mr D E. Wood said In regard to the boycott referred to by a previous speaker on the matter of the non-admittance of ladies to membership, it **' a question he had been somewhat diffident abont. He would suggest to the ladies ss sn alternative that they take np the game of golf- There was an excellent course right in their midst now. He played golf, and could quite recommend ft. , He concluded his remarks by wishing the club a pleasant afternoon and successful season.
