ANNIVERSARY DAY.

COMMERCIAL TRAVELLERS' ASSOCIATION. LOCAL CELEBRATION. Tho sixteenth anniversary of the establishment of the United Commercial Travellers' and Warehouseman's Association of New Zealand was celebrated last night by the Canterbury Commercial Travellers' and Warehousemen's Association at au "Association Day" smoke enocert. Mr K. W. Wade presided over a numerous attendance. The guest of tho evening was Mr Norton .Francis, president of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce. Greetings were received from the T'r.ited president (Mr F. W. Mitchell, Dunedin) and the general secretary (Mr W. F*. Herrich), who were absent on account of illuess. Tho toast of "The King" was loyally honoured. "The Day We Celebrate." Mr Norton Francis, who was received with applause, proposed "The Day We Celebrate," said he desired to congratulate tho Association on the great progress it was making. He noted that they wero close on the 3000 mark, and that they were likely to go on increasing, lie wished that any Association he was connected with had such an insurance scheme as that of the United Association. They were exceedingly fortunate in having such a fund. He desired to express the very great respect in which the Association was held by the public for the very unselfish way its members came forward and helped anv charitable object in difficulties. He complimented the Association on its ■ fund for blind soldiers and sailors, and said he did not think that there was i any fund so well run; it was like the widow's cruse —it was never allowed to i 'un dry. What was very creditable was that no expenses, not even stationery, ! were charged against it. Those interested in games would always remember the way in which the Canterbury Association had pnlled Lancaster Park out of the fire. He noted, from the August issue of the "N.Z. Traveller•," that difficulty was experienced in interesting tho younger members in Association work.
