School Committee. M.- T. W. West presided at the monthly meeting of the Opawa School Committee. It was decided to hold the i annual school sports on October 10th. With reference to a letter from the Canterbury School Committees' Associ- | at ion regarding suggested alterations to the school holidays and terms, it was decided to reply that the committee favoured the present terms. Accounts amounting to £l2 17s 6d were* passed for payment. Appreciative references were made to the services as secretary of Mr W. G. P. Ingley, who had resigned owing to leaving the disrupt. Mr Schenkel was appointed to 11 the vacancy. It was decided to hold a fancy dress social on November 2nd. Opawa Tennis Club. The 21st annual meeting of the Opawa Tennis Club was held in the club's pavilion. The president, Mr -Menzies, in moving the adoption of the (report and balance-sheet, said that the last season was one of the most successful yet enjoyed by the club, both in regard to finance and play on the courts. During the year several interclub matches, arranged by the ladies, were played on the club's courts, and to mark the occasion of the club's 21st birthday a very successful dance was run in the Winter Garden. The results to hani of the club's competitions were: —Ladies' handicap doubles, Mrs MeEwen and Miss E. Willis; ladies' junior championship, Miss B. Tipping; ladies' yankee doubles, Mrs Tregear and Miss Menzies; men's championship singles, Mr C. N. Franklin; men's handicap singles, Mr N. Brydges-Jones; men's handicap doubles, Messrs D. Minson and H. Parsons; men's junior championship, Mr D. Minson; combined yankee handicap doubles, Miss Menzies and Mr Tregear. This year four extra trophies were received with thanks from Miss Bowron, Mr G. Lucas, Mr K. White, and Mr N. Franklin. The election of officers for the coming season resulted: —President, Mr P. Menzies; vice-presidents, Messrs Polhill, Garland, Lucas, Harman, and Wilding; hon. secretary, Mr C. N. Franklin; hon. treasurer, Miss K. Esson; delegates to the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association, Messrs Harman, Minson, and Franklin; committee, Misses N. Eeed, Menzies, and E. Willis, Messrs O. Tregear, M. Minson, and G. Osborne; hon. auditor, Mr Hillary; tea committee, Miss Menzies and Mrs Tregear.

A very lengthy discussion took place in regard to the alterations to the pavilion, and although the general feeling of the members present favoured the idea, th« opinion was that not too much money should be spent in this l way. The incoming committee has been asked to draw -up a scheme, and the actual cost of the pavilion and the expenses each year for the upkeep. Votes of thanks were passed to Mr Menzies, Mr Hillary, and Mr Lneaa for their services 1n the past two years. An honorarium was granted to the secretary, Mr N. Franklin, and the treasurer, Miss K. Esson. Opening day was flxed for. October sth. Playing against Cashmere juniors, Opawa ladies' juniors were defeated by 100 game! to 83. The St. Albans Ladies' senior team defeated Opawa seniors by bl games lo 53. In the anal of the Men's Handicap Singles for the Wilding Cnp, N. Brydges Jones (owe 15 5-6) defeated P. B. Harinan (owe 40) 6-4, 6-1. Street Widening. Regret has been expressed at the inability of the City Council this year 1 to complete tb* widening of Locarno street. Some time ago the Opawa Burgesses' Association asked the vestry of St. Mark's Church if it would give a strip of land to the Council, in order that the widening of the road might be completed. The Church Property Board of Trustee* considered the matter, and generously offered to transfer to the Council a strip of land 668 links long and 26.25 links wide, on the under-stand-ing that the Council erected new fences and gates where required. The Council decided, however, that as the work entailed would cost approximately £350, and as there was only £3OO on the current year's estimates for street widening and rounding corners, that it could not accept the offer of the vwtry. It is understood that the Opawa Burgesses' Association intends asking the City Council to place a sum on next year's estimates for this work. Hetfaodlst Church. An interesting lecture on "Mountaineering in the Southern Alps," was given by Mr Kennedy at the Opawa Wesley Guild meeting. The King Carnival, organised in aid of the Opawa Methodist Church funds, will be opened on October 16th by Mr J. T. Norton, Lyttelton.
