ROAD RACE.

CANTERBURY CHAMPIONSHIP. A HARD COURSE. The first fifty-mile Canterbury championship of the Christchurch Cycling and Athletic Club was held on Saturday afternoon over a gruelling course laid from tho corner of Cracley street and Canal reserve, through JBedclifis, Sumner, Lyttelton, Governor'* Bay, Teddington, Motukarara, and Tai Tapu, finishing at Halswell. Thirty cyclists entered and twenty-fire started. The officials -were:—Keferee, Mr A. Garrard; starter, Mr P. C. Crooke; timekeepers, Mesara W. J. Walter and P. Lucas; judges, Messrs C. Bennett, S. Kershaw, A. Muir, P. Clark, H. Leigh, R. Stillwell, W. Cole, C. M. K.av»na.gh, H. Leathern, G. Henderson, G. Wylie, Robertson, J. Henderson, and C. Jones; raoe observers, Messrs J. Velvin and G. Henderson; hon. «ecretaries, Messrs B. F. Chapman and C. M. Kavanagh. The 20 minute men, <3. Willcox, S. LiU, R. Good, and S. G. Hazeldine got sway at 2.4 p.m. led by Willoox, who set a good pace. G. F. Goodftll led the second pack, the 1? minute men, his partners being H. O'Reilly and C. Bearman. There were three men on the 15 minute mark, T. Richards and J. H. Parsons being led out by C. Johnstone. A. C. Walker and A. R. Hawke, on the 13| minute mark, set a good pace, Hawke leading oat. On the 12 minute mark was H. Crofts, who had a lone course to pedal, his partner, C. Dawson, having to scratch at the last moment. The 10 minute men went o9 at a willing pace, E. A. McKaskell leading out W. W. Crofts, N. J. Muir. and W. K. Weir. The next lot out were the 7mis men, both the Bmin markers, W. T. Weir and J. Henderson, having scratched. Taylor led out Pither, making the pace hot. Four men, J. W. Jordan, 8. A. • Jordan, C. J. Sowden, and W. L. White, started off at Smin and settled down to steady work. The scartch men. H. G. Watson And L. W. Hill, were given a cheer &e they started out and settled to a steady pace as they got clear of the crowd. A big crowd gathered at the Halawell end of the course to see the - finish, and in the interval of waiting were entertained with two cycle races, one for boys and the other for "old-timers." The riders mr.de good time on the hilU and outdistanced the following cart on the descent. Except for some loose patches of metal which wrought many riders low the road was in good order. The scratch men Were goint* well at Gebbie'g Pass and were timed td be doing SI miles an hour. White punctured before Teddington was reached and Hawke had two jpills. g. A. Jordan had a spill at Governor's Bay when in a good position. At the bend with six miles to go Wei* had a good load of Imin 86sec. He was followed by O'Reilly, H. Watson, HUI, Parsons, and Crofts in a bunch. The riders raced in that order to the end, When the scratch men, Watson and Hill, came ahead to provide a thrilling battle for first place. Hill Leod on tho left, wag more or less wasted in that position. The Western man has the experience And ability, to rise up the beat avenue of attack in a twinkling, and forthwith sends the ball on its mission. Not so A. Sutherland. A grand defender but a very mediocre general in attack. Bristow again played a great game on the right. The Kaiapol man is the ideal half-back, a worrier in defence, with a brainy service in attack. It was not the fault of Johnstone or Muscroft. the fnll-baclcs. that Canterbury lost. True Johnstone gave • goal away, but his sterling defence more than compensated for that mistake. Muscroft also was very safe. His clearances and headwork were high-class at all times. Gwillam, in goal, a sain showed good Anticipation, and he had no chance with the shots which beat him. Wellington well deserved their win. With perhaps two exception* the team was a splendidly balanced combination. The intermediate line was an excellent connecting link between the rearguard and attack, but it was in the full-back division that the visitors excelled. Hopper was rather better than Quest, but this may have been because he was opposed to the weaker wing. Beth Showed a tenacity and aggressiveness which were difficult to circumvent. Their placing was admirably affected. McVean, in goal, was so seldom extended that it was difficult to farm an opinion of hia play. He effected one save, high up, which was impressive. Campbell, at centre-half, was the backbone of the team. He seldom erred in his forward service, and his disposal was placed In the most acceptable form to his vanguard—on the ground. J. McLeod, on the right, was rather weak in defence, but when in possession served his wing consistently. Hanlon, on the left, gave a bright display. Much of his good work was discounted by a poor wing partner forward. The Barton-Rigby wing was • strong combination Fast and snappy m action, they proved a lively handfo! for the Canterbury defence Rigby swings in a part'i-ularly dangerous shot. R. Mcleod and Smith partnered nicelv at centre and right. They are of the that races away from the jump, and they do not hesitate to shoot from any position They were always on the snot when required. Craig, on the left, does not represent Wellington's best. He had made for him some great opening*, but both hia shootin? ar.i centring wfrr* below standard. It was a clean game, and Mr J. Jennings had an easy time with the whistle.
