SQUARE SCHEME.

REPLIES TO MAYOR'S COMPLAINT. "The reason why no written communication was sent to the City Council was simply that we had not reached any decision, and did not have anything to communicate,'* said Dean Julius yesterday, when asked if he desired to make any comment on the remarks of the Mayor (Mr J. K. Archer) at the meeting of the City Council on Monday night concerning the fact that no reply bad been sent to the deputation which recently waite 1 on the Cathedral Chapter in respect of the lay-out of the Square. The Chapter, said the Dean, had to be very careful in considering all the* material before it, and it felt that it could not send any reply until it had reached some decision. "We did not wish to send a bald reply to the Council, as we are anxious to investigate the whole matter and co-operate as far as we can." he added. "Before reaching a decision we must examine the whole position very carefully and explore every possibilitv. It would be ungracious on our part" to send a bald negative beforo we had had an opportunity of considering the matter thoroughly in rft lation to the trust which we are called upon to safeguard " The Chancellor of the Diocese {Mr H. D. Andrews) said that no discourtesy was intended to anyone. No communication had been sent for the reason that there was nothing definite fo state. He had written his letter to the newspapers simply With a view to putting something before the public and he still stood bv what be had written. It had to be understood, how* ever, that the letter contained some of his personal oninions and for that reason could not be regarded as an official statement.
