OBITUARY. MRS MARTHA WHITE, By the recent death of Mrs Martha White, of 28 Mansfield avenue, St. Albans, many of the poor and the lonely, the sick and the sorrowful of Christchurch, have lost a staunch friend and a generous benefactor. The late Mrs White, who was the daughter of Mr John Patton, was born in the North of Ireland, and arrived in New Zealand by the ship Zealandia in 1863. She married Mr Wililam White, who was the member for Sydenham in the House of Representatives from 1881 to 1886 and Mayor of that borough from 1883 to 1885, and who, after a splendid career in the public life of Christchurch, died in 1900. Mrs White was a woman of remarkable personality—clever, practical, and cheerful—and her nimble wit and gift of repartee proclaimed her Celtic origin. She was a member of the Board of the Young Women's Christian Association where her foresight and commonsense were most helpful in the administration of affairs. She was also a member of the Hospital Lady Visitors' Association and a regular and welcome visitor to the Public Hospital and the Jubilee Home. During her long residence in New Brighton she was an -earnest worker for the Presbyterian Church. But it was for her quiet and unostentatious kindness to the poor and afflicted that she will be longest and most gratefully remembered. She never wearied of making garments for the I poor and of succouring the needy, but she rarely mentioned her good deeds, even to her intimate friends. Mrs White is survived by one son, Mr Wilfrid White, of the firm of Williams and White, solicitors, Cashel street, and four daughters—Mrs TTq.li (Little River), Mrs Armitage (Brown's road), Miss Winnie White, and Miaa Effie White.

Piper, assisted by Mr Howse. Mr Amyes arrived in Dunedin 68 years ago in the sailing ship Bombay. The late Mrs Amyes was of a kind and symnathetic nature and given to hospitality. She was a great supporter of her church and was much interested in mission work, both home and foreign. She leaves a husband and three sons—Mr H. C. Amyes (Annat), Dr. H. W. Amyes (Los Angeles), end Mr C. G. Amyes (Fernside)—and one daughter, Mrs Edgar Wiltshire (Christchurch) to mourn their loss. MRS JOSEPHINE GALLIGAN.
