BECKENHAM ROADS.

INSPECTION BY COUNCILLORS.

As the result of an inspection of the roads in Beckenham by members of the Works Committee of the City Council and the City Engineer on July 25th, the City Council advised the Beckenham Burgesses' Association last evening that the following works would be carried out:—

(a) The provision of a getaway for the stallage water at the intersection of Riverview street and Western terrace. (b) The clearing away of the mud and screening the footway along Western terrace from Riverview street to Birdwood avenue, (c) The removal of the loose metalling from the road surface and the filling in of ruts and depressions along Western terrace and Eastern terrace, (d) The removal of mud and the laying of screenings on the footway from about Corson avenue to Sandwich road, (e) The replacing of the missing cover from the sump in Eastern terrace, (f) Attending to the loose metalling and rolling in the patching in Malcolm avenue, (g) Attention to the culverts at the intersections in Birdwood avenue.

"The day could not have been better for our purposes," said Mr V. Moir. reporting on the inspection. "The roads were in a frightful state, and the faults of the district were glaring. We were all over our ankles in mud." Both Crs. Cooke and Sharpe he add<%d, had agreed that they had not seen worse roads in Christchurch. Subsequently. the Engineer (Mr Gaibraith) had stated that he was satisfied something would have to be done in the district, but the Council was short of monev. He made the suggestion that the Association consider raising a loan in the district to enable this work to be carried out immediately Mr Ayers remarked that the efforts of the Association had borne fruit and the roads would certainly be in better order at an early date. Mr Carlisle said the members of the Works Committee had stated point blank that the only way to get the channelling attended to immediately was by raising a loan in the district. If the work were to be done out of ordinary revenue, it might not be carried out for a vear. or even two years. The City Engineer had promised to go into the question of the cost of the work and submit a report to the Association. Several members expressed disapproval with the suggestion of raising a loan in the district and it was decided to hold oyer the q U€s tion until receipt of Mr Galbraith's report.
