The prohibitive price of potatoes has led to a diminution in consumption, with the result that the price fell to-day £4 per ton to .£lB. Merchants think that the (Sydney Housewives' Association boycott, coupled with the threat to bring in New Zealand potatoes to Australia, is largely responsible for the drop. HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. [THE PRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, August 5. The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated 3rd inst., from the High Commissioner for NewZealand, London: — TALLOW. There was no auction tliis week owing to the scarcity ox fresh arrivals and the slow demand. Prices continue unchanged. EGGS. With smaller arrivals the market has improved. Present quotations are : —English 15s to 22s per long 100, Dutch 13s 6d to 17s per long 100, Danish and French 12s 6d to 15s 6d per long 100, Polish, Russian, and Chinese 10s to 12s per long 100. APPLES. The s.s. Matakana has arrived. Her consignment of fruit is mature, but generally in good sound condition. The great bulk of the shipment consists of large apples, with a few medium-sized available, which met with a keen demand. Prices for Sturmer Pippin range from 14s to 24s per case according to size, and a few fancy Statesman 20s to 225. The s.s. Port Nicholson is due on Monday. HEMP. Tha Manila market is dull and values are practically unchanged. "J" grade for August-October shipment is quoted at £3B to £3B ss. The sisal market shows improvement and good marks No. 1 have been sold at up to £4l 10s, but the market was quieter at the close. September-November and OctoberDecember shipments have been sold at £4l, No. 2 good marks £39 to £39 10s. Ia the New Zealand market more interest has been shown, but very little is offered. Closing vaiues for July-August shipment were:—Highpoints £33 10s, fair £3l. Tow —Second grade £2l 10s, third grade £l7 10s. OATS. The market is steady and quiet. A Plate August-September shipment has been sold at 24s 3d, and nei crop for January-Feb-ruary shipment has been sold up to 23s 6d. Chilean is offered for August-September shipment at 23s 9d, probable buyers offering 3d less. English harvesting is in progress and the market for native oats is quiet. Good white old crop make 30s to 31s. The new crop is reported to be thin in grain but of good colour. The same applies to barley. The nominal value*of New Zealand A grade Gartons for August-September shipment is 31s 9d. PEAS. The maple trade is slow. New Zealand Partridge for August shipment are offered at 61s, but buyers* ideas do not run to mora than 60s. A grade Tasmanian for August-September shipment are offered at 735, but buyers are not coming forward. English are firmly held, choice old maple making up to 58s 3d. > In blues there is no demand for colonial, the only business being in Japanese old crop, which are steadily held. New crop are easier, with some interest shown at reduced prices. A July-August shipment has been sold for £l7, and an October-November shipment for £lB 10s. The nominal value of A grade Tasmanian ia £ls to £l6, and New Zealand £l4 to £ls. The English crops of maple and blues are reported to be plentiful and of really good quality. BEANS. The market is firm for English, old crop making 56s and spring crop 57s to 58s. Chinese horse are easier as regards sailers, an August-September shipment being sold at £9 6s 3d, but buyers are holding back. DANISH COCKSFOOT. The market is quiet and supplies are scarce. The value of August-September shipment is 69s c.i.f. New Zealand. WOOL. There is rather more enquiry for tops, but prices are too low for acceptance, and the actual business is small. Present quotations are:—64's warp 3s 3d to 3s 3Jd per lb, average 3s lid to 3s 2d per lb; 56's 2s 4}d per lb; 50's prepared 2s 2Jd per lb; 40's prepared Is 9d per lb. LONDON PRODUCE MARKETS. The Bank of New Zealand has received the following advice from its London office as at the close of business last week: — Butter —Slow; 171s t6 172s per cwt. Cheese —Slow; white 86s per cwt, coloured 90s per cwt. Frozen Meat—The market for wether mutton is weaker for lighter weights, and is expected to decline. The demand for heavyweights is good. The market for ewes is dull. The market for lambs is over-supplied, and prices are affected in consequence. There is a fair demand for beef.
