REFUND OF RATES.

w OVERCHARGE BY COUNCIL. Through a clerical error, the Outwbury Chamber of Commerce I>m beea charged £ll7 lis Id too mack i» City rates, and is now seeking a wfaad. Last evening the Finance Committee reported to the City Council: The Canterbury Chamber of Commerce has written with reference to the overcharge of rates on the old Council Chambers, owing to an error is the valuation roll when tS»e City *** revalued in 1821; the area occupied by the building being shown as 32 perches, whereas it contains only 1« perches. The valuation was:— Capital value, £10,280; unimproved value, £5280; value of improvement*, correct valuation is: £B6BO, £3650, and £sooto. The Chamber of Commerce applies for a refund of the rates for the four years it has been in ©e«npatioa. but as the Bating Act provide* that no judgment for any amount of rata* due shall be given after three y«T*, * refund, if any, should be based on a three-year period. The total amount involved for three years is £ll7 lis Hi, made up as follows:-

The question of making a refund *** submitted to the Controiler and Au«v tor-General, and he states that as the over-payment was made by the Cham ber of Commerce through a mistake pi feet, the Audit oae# objection to the overpaid funded by the Council. The Cyaautty recommends that the subject to the approval of the Cb*M church Drainage Board and the makariri River Trntt, regarding their respective portions of the rates. The elause was adopted.
