It intimated that it could arrange for a junior representative team to play Ashburton on September 14th, at Timaru, as a curtain-raiser to the senior match. With reference to a letter received at the last meeting from the secretary of the Mayfield Football Club, protesting against the refereeing of Mr B. N. Annibal, and the subsequent objection to the letter by the Union, the president (Mr J. D. Murdoch), and the chairman (Mr E. J. Burgess), of the Mayfield Club, wrote stating that the letter was unauthorised by the Mayfield Club. The Club had every confidence in the Appointment Board of the Union, and was quite satisfied with the refereeing of every match in which it had played this year. The referee (Mr R. M. Annibal) wrote enclosing a letter he had received from the secretary, who was also captain of the Mayfield Club, regarding the mat ter, which stated that he had misunderstood his Instructions, in view of this the secretary could hardly be dealt with very seriously, but he requested that his club write to the Union withdrawing the letter, and until such was done, the secretary be not allowed to play In any matches, lie asked tor this penalty because the letter had already appeared in the Press, and it branded him as a referee in whom no club would, in the future, have confidence. He thanked the Union for its confidence as expressed at its last meeting. The chairman xaid that Mr Fagan had written apologising, so if they wrote to Ur Annibal acquainting him with the terms of the letters, the matter would be cleared. This was agreed to. The Springbum Club wrote protesting •gainst the action of the Union in closing the junior competition. A similar protest was received from the Methven Club.

The eeeretary reported that there were still five matches to bo played before the second round was completed. The following representative team has been selected to play against North Otago, at Oamaru, on Saturday;— Fullback, B. Jordan: three-quarters: E. Clark, D. Talnui, and B. Brown; fiveeighths: G. Day (captain), and J. Todd; half hack, O. Dalton; forwards: O. Whiting (wing), Smith, A. MeOormick, C. Pawson, C. Elms, J. Farr, F. Hood, and J, Mulhern. Reserves: J. MeLauchlan, F. Kennedy, and K. M cConniek. It was decided to write to the Meth▼en Football Club expressing thanks for the excellent arrangements made in connexion with the Town v. Country match on Saturday. Tfce weather during the week-end was very fine, with frosty nights and sunny days. On Sunday afternoon a oold east wind blew, and the evening was eold, but daring the night the wind changed to the north-west. Monday morning was dull, with a light southeast wind, but in the forenoon a violent nor'-wester suddenly arose, and very soon clouds of dust were flying. In the afternoon the wind fell, and the remainder of the day was dull and calm. The drying winds will be beneficial in drying the farm lands and enabling them to be cultivated.

The sudden death on Saturday of Miss Alice Mary (Mamie) Morland came as a shock to her many friends and relatives. Although of a retiring disposition, the late Miss Morland, who had resided with her sister, Mrs W. lioag, "Gracefleld," Bakaia, for a number of years, wan well known in the district, where her kindly nature had made her many friends. She was an ardent church worker and a member of the W.C.T.U., and she will be missed by a large circle of friends. The funeral, which took place at the Rakaia Cemetery yesterday afternoon, was very largely attended, the service being con ducted by the Rev. A. 8. Morrison. The large number of beautiful wreaths, testified to the esteem in which tho late Miss Morland was held.

The hare drive held in aid of the school funds was a great success, resulting in a I>ag of 20< hares for 30 guns. Luncheon was generously provided by Mesdames Barton and Campbell at the residence of Mr H. C. Barton. METHVEN. The final match in the seven-a-side Rugby football tournament organised by the Methven School was played at the Domain on Saturday, the finalists being Methven A and Lyndhurst. After a good game, the latter won by 3 points (a try scored by Lilley) to nil. Mr K. H. Annibal was referee. On Saturday evening tho members of the Methven Football Club entertained the visiting footballers at a dance in the Angliean Hall. There was a very large attendance, the hall being crowd ed. Music for the dance was supplied by Mesdames Lawrence, Thompson, Miss B. Beary, and Messrs Dan Petrie and E. C. McLaren. Mr Len Dalton was M.C.

MT. SOMERS. At the annual ball of the Mt. Somers Ladies' Hockey Club, music was supplied by Mrs Mitchell's Orchestra (Ashburton), and extras were played by Mrs W. T. Goodrich. Messrs W. A. 11. Sharpe and C. Monk were M.C.'s. The lucky spot waltz was won by Mr and Mrs A. B. Lochhead, and the Monte Carlo by Miss M. Smith and Mr \Y. Bittoek. July was the wettest month experienced for over three years, rain falling on 17 days, and totalling 764 points, compared with 121 points in the previous July. A maximum fall of 307 points was recorded on the 17th. The year's rainfall totals 24 inches, compared with "20.16 inches for the same period last year. Snow fell on the 18th and 28th. and frosts were registered on 23 mornings, with a maximum of 19 degrees on the 11th. Best scores at the second shoot of the Mt Somers Miniature Rifle Club for the vice-captain's trophy were:— iSeniors, F. W and E. Gifkins, 76; juniors, A. Thompson, 70. DORIE. During the month of July rain fell at Dorie on thirteen days, the maximum fall occurring on the 18th, when 160 points were registered. The total rainfall for the month was 4.21 inches, and for the first seven months of the year 18.56 inches. Only 37 points of rain fell in July, 1928. The weather during the month was very cold, there being ten very heavy frosts. PENDARVES. The Pendarves Social Club held its monthly evening on Friday, when the surrounding districts were well represented. Mr J. W. Watson controlled the games. The winners were Miss E. Doig, Miss N. Flynn, Mr Bruce Doig, and Mr Percy Doig. After supper a dance was held, the music being supplied by Mrs W. Cain, Miss Flynn, and Miss L. Lambie. DROMORE. The three-year-old child of Mr and Mrs J. Blackburn, while playing inside the house, slipped on a polished floor and cracked the bone of the hip. The little sufferer is now in the County Hospital. The friends of Mr D. H. Harrington will regret to hear that he is seriously ill in the County Hospital. SEAFIELD. At the range on Saturday night the Seafield Miniature Rifle Club held a practice in view of the match to be fired shortly between teams representing Dorie and Seafield. An address is to be given by Mr Lukey, of the Government Veterinarian Department, on the ailments of ewes at lambing time. The meeting is being held under the auspices of the Seafield Farmers' Union. Supper will be provided.

NEWLAND. The Newland School Committee held a card evening on Saturday, when there were about fifty present. Mr R. E. L. Hampton supervised che games. A prize given by Mrs L. Robertson was won by Miss A. Robertson, Miss Jean Shimmin and Miss E. Clemens being equal second. A prize given by Mr W. Clemens was won by Mr L. Begg, Mr R. Anthony being second. For the dance which followed Mr T. Williß was M.C., and the music was supplied by Miss Gardiner (Ashburton) and Mr A. Benni son. Gramophone music was also supplied by Mr Stevens. A vote of thanks was passed to the donors of the prizes.
