CITY COUNCIL.

LAST NIGHT'S MEETING. The City Council met last evening. Those present were: The Mayor (Mr J. K. Archer), Crs. D. G. Sullivan, M.P., E. R. McCombs. F. R. Cooke, P. W. Sharpe, T. H. Butterfield, A. E. Armstrong, H. T, J. Thacker, A. 1. Fraer, A. W. Beaven, J. A. Flesher, E. Parlane, M. E. Lyons, W. H. Williamson. J. W. Beanland, J. Parlane, and E. H. Andrews. The financial statement gave the following particulars for the two Weeks ended August sth. 1929:—General rate levied £125.465 19s 9d, collected £123,563 13s 3d, outstand.ng £1897 6s 6d. Receipts since last statement, £18,203 4s 4d. Aeeovats authorised for payment £18,452 Is Bd. An invitation was received from the preßjdent and Council of the Philosophical Institute of Canterbury, requesting the pleasure of the company of the Mayor and members of the Council at the presentation of the Darwin Medal to Dr. Leonard Cockayne, in the Canterbury College Hall to morrow, at 8 p.m. It was decided to accept the invitation. A letter was received from the Town Clerk of Westport stating that he had been directed to convey the sincere thanks of his Council for the Christchurch City Counc.l's sympathy with the residents of Westport and district in the damage caused by the recent earthquakes. The Bank of New Zealand forwarded letter of authority forms covering operations on the City Council's accounts for completion under seal. The letter was received, and a resolution authorising two members of the Finance Committee, with the City Treasurer, to act for the Council was carried. Abattoir, Markets, and Reserves Committee. The Abattoir, Markets, and Reserves Committee reported:— Barrington and Beckenham Parks—The rough piece of ground of about li acres at the south-eastern end of B&rrington Park has been ploughed up. Elmwood Park —The main pathway between Heaton street and St. Andrew's square has been top-dressed with screenings. Repairs have been carried out to the children's playground. Jerrold Street Reserve—The trenching of the new border has been completed, and over 200 native trees and shrubs have been planted out. St. Albans Park—The repairs to the post-and-rail fence round the park have been completed, and the fence will be painted as soon as the weather is more settled. Central Reserves and River Banks—A con siderable amount of soil was obtained from building excavations in Kiltnore street, and was carted on to Cranmer square and Simeon street Reserve for top-dressing purposes. Nursery—Over 11,000 young pine trees have been lined out in nursery rows. Woolston Park—A pathway through the park is being formed from Ferry road to Silvester street. » The report was adopted. Electricity Committee. The Electricity Committee reported recommending the purchase of a Sharpies oil purifier at a cost of £467 10s for the iron clad switchgear in Armagh street. Tenders were considered by tho committee for the purchase of 11,000-volt ironclad switchgear required for the main equipment in Milton street substation. Tenders have been received for both the ironclad switchgear and the supervisory control equipment. The latter is a comparatively new development, and the information submitted is not yet sufficiently complete to enable a rei'om mendation to be made. It is therefore proposed to postpone consideration of this apparatus until the tenderers have submitted further information. Tenders, as follows, have been received for the ironclad switchgear: A. D. Riley and Co., £5174 14s 6d; National Electric Co., £5836 12s 6d; British General Electric Co.*, £6327 17s; Cory, Wright, and Salmon, £6355 15s; Reyrolle and Co., £6538 5s 4d; Alliance Electric Co., £6543 10s; Metropolitan Vickers, £7724; Turnbull and Jones, £14,422. The general manager recommended acceptance of the lowest tender, and the committee endorsed his decision. The report was adopted. Town Planning. Housing, and Health Committee. The Town Planning. Housing, and Health Committee reported:— Mr G. E. Patton has applied for permission to install a cold pipe bending machine on a sect'on situated next to No. 6 Carlyle street. Sydenham. T!i>" report was adopted. Water Strpn'y and Wck" Committee. The Water Supply and Works Committee reported : . The rain during the past month has largely impeded the execution of works of all natures. Considerable damage has been done to the roads, and repairs are being carried out as quickly as possible. Owing to the fact that, the Halswell quarry is unable to be worked on wet days, there has been

a shortage of ljin metal suitable for patching ordinary macadam roads, and it was therefore found necesary to obtain supplies from both the Glenmore and Garland 8 quarries. . Authority was requested for the expenditure of £330 for duplicating the drilling plant at the Halswell quarry, and the acceptance of Messrs A. S. Paterson and Co.'s tender for a 10 h.p. motor was recommended, also that of N. McG;?livray at £64 for sinking test piles for the Princes street bridge. Acceptance of the following other tenders 'was recommended :—Christchurch Gas Co., Ltd., coal tar, Bid per gallon delivered in bulk at works, Waltham road; Shell Oil Company, mexphajtic and spramex bitumen, £6 18s 6d, in drum containers.
